Birds of Paradise's Agent for Change project, with support from the Playwrights' Studio, Scotland, is presenting Changing : Roles in March 2008.

This day-long event is targeted at writers and creators of new work in Scottish theatre.

The Agent for Change project has spent the past two years investigating why there aren’t more disabled actors in mainstream Scottish theatre and instigating various outreach activities to affect change. Our Changing: events seek to stimulate discussion within a particular sector of the industry and look at proactive steps that we can all take.

Changing : Roles will be a day of discussion and debate, looking at what has been happening in Scotland over the past few years. With contributors from around the UK, we will hear about the ways in which writing in an inclusive manner has developed recently and look at ways in which we can push the boundaries even further.

Programme Highlights

Revolution in The Head – Playwright David Greig will ask what happens if we take the fight for inclusivity into the realm of the imagination?

Casting the Net – Highlighting his current production, The Mother Ship, playwright Douglas Maxwell will reflect on his approaches to creating work for an inclusive cast.

I Want a Six Foot Blonde Playwright Alan Wilkins and Birds of Paradise’s Artistic Director Morven Gregor in an open conversation look at their creative process while working together on Birds of Paradise’s autumn production Offshore.

Whose Debate is this Anyway? – Playwright, director and actor Garry Robson will ask whether disabled writers and directors are the only ones qualified to speak on disability themes.

Round Table – Chaired by Birds of Paradise’s Company Manager Shona Rattray, this debate gives an opportunity to share opinions, thoughts and actions from the day. The panel will include Robert Softley, Birds of Paradise’s Agent for Change.
