Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's August e-bulletin.

These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as any other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

Below you will find information about; our current activities in Studio; upcoming initiatives for playwrights in Opportunities and read about interesting shows, talks and conferences over the next few months in Events. Quick Links catches everything else we haven't got room for! As always all details can be found on our website www.playwrightsstudio.co.uk, especially if you have any problems viewing this bulletin.

This is your last chance to enter our Ignite Playwriting Competition: the winner gets six months mentoring from a leading playwright and a rehearsed reading at Glasgow's Aye Write Festival in February 2007!

1. Opportunities Critical Exchange  

Cove Park Residency
9 – 13 October 2006

Applications are invited for a week long residency at the internationally renowned artist centre at Cove Park, near Helensburgh this October.

The residency is open to theatre practitioners (including writers) working or based in Scotland.

The residency provides theatre practitioners with the opportunity to reflect upon their creative process and ideas, to increase their exposure to different ideas and practice, and encourage dialogue between different theatre disciplines. During the week practitioners will have the opportunity to work individually and in groups; at least two sessions will be facilitated by practising artists and practitioners.

The project is supported by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and the Scottish Arts Council.

2. Studio BBC Scotland Radio Drama Present

Radio Play - "The Playwright's Studio!"

BBC Scotland Radio Drama has established a strong track record in producing powerful and challenging drama for Radio 4 and Radio 3. Working with writers in Scotland and beyond, the Department's output is both original and international.

As part of Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's festival events, BBC Scotland Radio Drama will host Radio Play - "The Playwright's Studio!", an insight into radio drama with extracts from new plays and hot tips from radio producers.

The session will be run twice on Monday 21 August 2006

3. Studio Plays Aloud Rehearsed Readings

Scotland's playwrights are arguably the best in the world, and currently dominating the world's stages, but whose plays will we be talking about at festivals in the future?

In the first two years of activity Playwrights' Studio, Scotland has had the opportunity to work with some excellent new playwrights to help them in the development of their work. For our 2006 Plays Aloud presentation we want to introduce you to four of these writers whose work could make an outstanding contribution to the future of theatre.

4. Studio Ignite Playwriting Competition Last chance to enter

Playwrights' Studio, Scotland’s National Playwriting Competition

Read something inspirational lately?
Something which moved you?

Write a scene which has been inspired by a novel of the last sixty years and paint a picture of life for you in Scotland today.

Ignite is a national playwriting competition aiming to find undiscovered voices for the Scottish Stage. Using a contemporary piece of literature as inspiration, we want you to write a short play scene (not an adaptation of the original source).

The winner will receive six months focused dramaturgical and directorial support, advice and training to develop their scene into a full length play, which will be given a rehearsed reading as part of Glasgow City Council’s Aye Write Festival in February 2007.

Entries will be judged anonymously by our Creative Director, Julie Ellen, and by our Associate Playwrights.

The deadline for entries is August 31 2006, and winners will be announced at the end of September.

5. Opportunities Short & Sweet and HotInk

Short & Sweet
The biggest short play festival in the world is inviting playwrights the world over to submit plays of up to 10 minutes duration.

The deadline is 15 September 2006.

6. Opportunities Up Close: Dundee

A day of Playwrights’ Studio activity will be taking place in Dundee.

Script Surgeries
Your chance to discuss your work face-to-face with one of our Associate Playwrights and get professional feedback. Concentrating on one particular script, you will receive advice on how to improve the writing and make that script the best it can be.

To be considered for a surgery, please send an e-mail or letter to info@playwrightsstudio.co.uk with -

Your play title; A short synopsis; A brief summary of your writing to date; Two specific questions relating to your play.

To be eligible you must -
Be an unproduced writer living or born in Scotland; Have a first draft of a script completed; Must not be involved in a current Playwrights’ Studio scheme.

The deadline for entries is 12noon Friday 1 September 2006.
Once entries are received we will contact selected writers for their scripts.

Extract of Play by Hamish Gillies
This script in hand presentation will introduce the work of a writer who has been supported by Playwrights’ Studio to develop their piece.

Shuggie Minto
by Lesley Anne Reid
This is a rehearsed reading of an Evolve winner’s script. Selected through our 2004 Ignite competition, Lesley Anne Reid has developed her winning scene into a full length play after being mentored and supported by Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland.

Tickets are £2 (to see both readings) and can be booked directly from the Dundee Rep Theatre Box Office on 01382 223530.

Our Bookshop will be open from 12noon with a wide selection of published play scripts from Scotland’s Playwrights.


7. Studio Fuse

Fuse is a unique Scotland-wide initiative that puts new plays in front of the artistic directors at the country's top theatre companies.

8. Events WYSIWYG

27 & 28 September 2006
The Byre Theatre, St Andrews

Scotland’s annual showcase and conference of performing arts for children and young people, WYSIWYG is the key meeting place for all those involved in this area. It offers a unique and enjoyable opportunity to view a snapshot of all latest productions available by Scottish based companies and to hear from invited guest speakers.

Celebrating, promoting and developing playwriting in Scotland

A wide selection of published plays from Scotland’s playwrights are available from Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland at reduced prices.

For a full list of titles available visit our website and download a form to place your order direct with us.

During the Festival plays are available from Royal Lyceum Theatre and our own Bookshop at the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

All year round a small selection of titles is available from the Scottish Parliament shop in Edinburgh.
