1.Studio Wild Lunch Playwriting Workshop

Paines Plough and Graeae are looking for new writers for the infamous Wild Lunch.

Over the past 9 years Wild Lunch has become a highly regarded fixture on the new writing calendar. Emerging playwrights are given an opportunity to work closely with Paines Plough's artistic team to complete forty-five minute plays which are given a lunchtime script-in-hand performance. Previous Wild Lunchers include Sarah Kane, Dennis Kelly and Mark Ravenhill.

This year Wild Lunch is expanding to seek new voices outside of London. In partnership with Graeae Theatre Company we want to inspire new playwrights from regionally diverse backgrounds whose work could become part of tomorrow's theatrical landscape.

We're looking for anyone who might be interested in finding out about playwriting to join in. No experience necessary. This one day writing workshop is aimed at exploring your creativity as a writer, inspiring the beginnings of a play and finding out how you can get involved in Wild Lunch 2006.

4. Studio Ignite Playwriting Competition How to enter

Playwrights' Studio, Scotland’s National Playwriting Competition

Read something inspirational lately?
Something which moved you?

Write a scene which has been inspired by a novel of the last sixty years and paint a picture of life for you in Scotland today.

IGNITE is a national playwriting competition aiming to find undiscovered voices for the Scottish Stage. Using a contemporary piece of literature as inspiration, we want you to write a short play scene (not an adaptation of the original source).

The winner will receive six months focused dramaturgical and directorial support, advice and training to develop their scene into a full length play, which will be given a rehearsed reading as part of Glasgow City Council’s Aye Write Festival in February 2007.

Entries will be judged anonymously by our Creative Director, Julie Ellen, and by our Associate Playwrights.
The deadline for entries is August 31 2006, and winners will be announced at the end of September.

Advice from Peter Arnott, Associate Playwright

"Don't be scared off by the reference to a piece of literature. We're not looking for adaptations. It's the world that jumps out at you to prompt your art - it jumped out at all those other writers too.

Go for whatever you like - you will always find someone has been here before - but you will do it your way."

To enter the competition go to www.playwrightsstudio.co.uk and download an entry pack.

5. Opportunities Brave New Roles Award Sphinx Theatre Competition

Sphinx Theatre Company announces a new award for the playwright who creates the most interesting role for a woman in a new play. This scheme designed to create a body of work containing stronger roles for women in contemporary plays.

The winning playwright will be awarded £2000 as well as the commissioning fee and the successful play will be presented as part of the Brave New Roles showcase. Five additional short-listed writers will also have their pieces performed as part of the award's lunchtime showcase. The winning play will be produced in 2007/2008.

The award will go to the writer whose play contains the most interesting and strongest role(s) for a woman. Merit will be given to characters which move away from the usual stereotypes of women, often seen in theatre. "Give actresses something to really get their teeth into!"

Deadline is 30 September 2006, visit Sphinx Theatre website to learn more.
