Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's November e-bulletin.

These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as any other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

Studio News covers our current activities and items of interest; Opportunities includes useful information and competitions; our Events section lists upcoming activities; and in Quick Links you can access the world wide web for news on other events and productions that we hope may be of interest to you.

Opportunities

The George Mackay Brown Writing Fellowship
Applications are now being accepted for the first George Mackay Brown Writing Fellowship in Orkney.

The Fellowship will run throughout 2007 and will be offered as a freelance contract to the successful writer.

Applications need to arrive by 5pm on 16 November.

The Brian Way Award 2007
An award for playwrights who write for young people (formerly The Children's Award). Submitted plays should be suitable for young people upto the age of eighteen and be at least 45 minutes long. They must have been produced professionally between 1 July 2005 and 30 June 2006. This may be a first, second or third production of a play written within the past ten years. The playwright must either be resident in the UK or Eire, or have had a writing association with a UK based theatre company.

Deadline for submissions is 30 November 2006 by post to:
Theatre Centre, Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old Street, London, EC1V 9LT.

The value of the award is £6,000

SAC Writers' Bursaries
Assistance to enable published writers of literary work and playwrights to devote more time to their writing.

Minimum award is £3,000 upto a maximum of £15,000.

Next Deadline is 15 January 2007.

King's Cross New Writing Award 2007
Playwrights can send upto two unpublished and unperformed scripts to:
The Courtyard Theatre, 10 York Way, King's Cross, London, N1 9AA by 2 April 2007.

The winning playwright will be contracted to The Courtyard Theatre. Each entry must include a fee of £5 per play.

Call for Plays confronting racial and ethnic issues
New and original plays confronting racial or ethnic issues are the requirement of entries for the biennial Ruby Lloyd Apsey Award.

The winner will receive US$1,000 plus a staged reading at University of Alabama and the possibility of a full production.

Box of Tricks Theatre Company are currently looking for new scripts for future projects. They are dedicated to developing new talent and work, which will inspire and engage the audience.

Etruria Cafe Theatre New Playwright Competition
For writers who have never had a play produced, with a special category for writers from Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle.

Prizes: Open Competition: £100, 2 x £25
Plays by multiple writers are welcome. The length of play must be 50-90 minutes, and use 2-4 main actors with 1-6 minor support allowed. Scenery and props must be suitable for touring. Scripts must be clearly presented on A4 sheets, printed in plain font, size 14, and must be stapled, or securely clipped. Play title and page number must appear on every sheet, but not the writer's name. A separate sheet must give the play title, writer's name and contact details. Scripts will not be returned. Send SA postcard for acknowledgement of receipt and SAE for all results. Fee for each play is £4. Cheques should be made to etruria Cafe Theatre, and sent with entries to : 66A Rowley Bank, Stafford, ST17 9BG.

Culture 2007 - call for proposals

The European Commission has announced a conditional call for proposals under the new Culture 2007 programme.

The general objective of the programme shall be "to enhance the cultural area shared by Europeans and based on a common cultural heritage through the development of cultural cooperation between the creators, cultural players and cultural institutions, of the countries taking part in the Programme with a view to encouraging the emergence of European citizenship".

Studio News

Byre Dogs at A Play, A Pie and A Pint.

Calum Smith Lawrence's beautiful play Byre Dogs is on at 1pm from 13 - 18 November at Oran Mor, Glasgow and 20 - 25 November at the Jamhouse, Edinburgh as part of the Autum season of A Play, A Pie and A Pint, sponsored by Orange.
Byre Dogs was one of the runner up plays from our Orange Playriting Prize competition in 2005. Set on Lewis, it previously received a rehearsed reading at the Citizens Theatre.

Ignite Competition Update
A shortlist of six playwrights has now been selected.This Saturday 18 November they will hear their scenes read by professional actors and be interviewed by our Judging Panel (Julie Ellen, Christopher Deans, Douglas Maxwell, Ann Marie Di Mambro and Aileen Ritchie - Writer in Residence, Glasgow Libraries).

A winner will then be announced who will receive mentoring and support from Playwrights' Studio, Scotland to turn their scene into a full play. A rehearsed reading of which will be given as part of Glasgow's Aye Write! Festival in February 2007.

A wide range of published plays by Scotland's Playwrights is available from Playwrights' Studio.

You can buy discounted copies of texts direct from our website by visiting our Plays Sales page or from outlets in Edinburgh at the shop in The Scottish Parliament or the Box Office at the Royal Lyceum Theatre.


The Space
Playwrights' Studio, Scotland has a private office space available to writers for the following purposes: to write in a working environment; meetings with other writers, press and producers;
round the table script development; reading room with access to Plays Library.

Traverse Masterclasses and Play Readings
Masterclass Encounters - Philip Howard

Wednesday 15 November, 7pm
The Traverse Theatre's Artistic Director talks about his experience premiering new plays. He will discuss the challenges of developing, premiering and working directly with new playwrights.

Masterclass Encounters - Rona Munro
Friday 17 November, 7pm
A chance to hear playwright Rona Munro talk about her journey as a writer through the commissioning, writing and production of her latest play. Rona's previous work for theatre includes 'Strawberries in January,' 'Gilt,' 'Iron' and 'Bold Girls.' Rona is currently the Traverse Theatre's SAC Senior Playwriting Fellow.

Interplay: Online Festival
The Online Festival is all about playwright development in both script and skin. It provides a blank virtual canvas stage - it is up to you to fill it! Young playwrights, aged 13-26, receive online tutoring and support .
