E-BULLETIN: October 2006Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's October e-bulletin. These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as any other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources. There are some major playwriting awards listed under Opportunities and as the nights get longer you may want to start planning an application to the Scottish Arts Council Writers' Bursaries (Awards of £3,000 to £15,000) with a deadline of 15 January 2007. As part of our efforts to make the eBulletin as useful as possible to you we are now grouping information as Opportunities, Studio News, Events and Quick Links so you can easily go to the area of most interest to you. SAC Writers' Bursaries Assistance to enable published writers of literary work and playwrights to devote more time to their writing. Minimum award is £3,000 upto a maximum of £15,000. Next Deadline is 15 January 2007. Follow this link to the SAC Website to download an application and guidance.
King's Cross New Writing Award 2007 Playwrights can send upto two unpublished and unperformed scripts to: The Courtyard Theatre, 10 York Way, King's Cross, London, N1 9AA by 2 April 2007. The winning playwright will be contracted to The Courtyard Theatre. Each entry must include a fee of £5 per play. Call to British Asian Writers Burnley Youth Theatre is running a competition and workshops to help budding writers improve their skills. Their aim is to find writers who can write about the experiences of British Asians. Written in English, unpublished and not previously performed scripts should be sent to: Winners will receive cash bursaries of up to £1,000 and continuing support. Visit www.burnleyyouththeatre.com Call for Plays confronting racial and ethnic issues New and original plays confronting racial or ethnic issues are the requirement of entries for the biennial Ruby Lloyd Apsey Award. Finborough Theatre continue to welcome unsolicited scripts This west London venue which champions new British writing welcomes unsolicited scripts from playwrights. Submit a piece to New Writing Scotland 2007 New Writing Scotland is an annual volume publishing poetry and prose from emerging and established writers. Each piece appears in print for the first time and has been drawn from a wide cross-section of Scottish culture and society. Studio News Ignite Competition Update A winner will then be announced who will receive mentoring and support from Playwrights' Studio, Scotland to turn their scene into a full play. A rehearsed reading of which will be given as part of Glasgow's Aye Write! Festival in February 2007.
Play Sales A wide range of published plays by Scotland's Playwrights is available from Playwrights' Studio. You can buy discounted copies of texts direct from our website by visiting our Plays Sales page or from outlets in Edinburgh at the shop in The Scottish Parliament or the Box Office at the Royal Lyceum Theatre. Events The Algebra of Freedom by Raman Mundair The Algebra of Freedom is a taut political drama that asks questions about identity, redemption, faith and compassion in a society waging a war against terror. Raman Mundair was recently mentored by Playwrights' Studio, Scotland and an earlier version of The Algebra of Freedom was featured during our Plays Aloud Readings 2007 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
