Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's September e-bulletin.

These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as any other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

Below you will find information about; our current activities in Studio News; upcoming initiatives for playwrights in Opportunities and read about interesting shows, talks and conferences over the next few months in Events. Quick Links catches everything else we haven't got room for! As always all details can be found on our website www.playwrightsstudio.co.uk, especially if you have any problems viewing this bulletin.

We have just returned from a great day of events in Dundee which included workshops and script surgeries, as well as readings at the Rep with their fabulous ensemble actors. Listen to the feature on BBC Radio Scotland's The Radio Cafe from Wednesday 20 September 2006.

This month we have - readings of new plays by Liam John Hurley, Kathy McKean and Mark Russell; competitions and awards including SAC Creative Scotland Awards (Deadline 27 October 2006) and details of great new work to see in the coming month.

1. Opportunities Creative Scotland Awards 2007  

Application Deadline 27 October 2006

The Scottish Arts Council offers up to 10 Creative Scotland Awards of £30,000 from National Lottery funding. Awards are made to individual artists with a major record of achievement who live and work in Scotland. The awards provide a unique opportunity to experiment and realise imaginative ideas in a major project.

Previous playwright recipients have been David Greig and Tom McGrath.

2. Opportunities Playwriting Award Mildred & Albert Panowski Playwriting Award

Deadline for Submissions 31 October 2006

Run by Forest Roberts Theatre at Northern Michigan University and dedicated to the parents of its Director, Dr. James A. Panowski, this competition has a prize of $2000 and the opportunity to see your play produced by the theatre.

3. Opportunities fast +Dirty in Aberdeen Call for submissions...

fast +Dirty in Aberdeen
9 - 21 October 2006

Applications are invited for creator and performer participants in a two-week high-level workshop fast+Dirty, facilitated by Ian Spink and hosted by citymoves dance agency, Aberdeen.

The workshops, involving a mix of dancers, writers, composers, artists, actors, choreographers, performers and musicians will explore cross art-form collaboration and high-speed creative problem solving. Daily tasks and presentations with different teams in a range of locations will produce a series of unusual 'theatre experiments' and reveal new approaches to making choreography, theatre and performance. There are a number of free places available on this workshop and citymoves can assist in travel and accommodation in Aberdeen.

4. Opportunities Abderite Theatre Residency

Abderite Theatre in association with the National Theatre of Scotland [NTS] Workshop is pleased to announce a unique and exciting theatre residency for individuals in the North East interested in creating professional theatre in Aberdeen.

6th and 7th October 2006
The residency will provide continued professional development for those of you working in the theatre business; enable you to experience working with practitioners who are at the forefront of radical, innovative theatre in Scotland and in the UK; and allow space for young semi-professional, older youth theatre participants, new and established theatre artists in Aberdeen and the North East to meet and work together. NB All participants must be aged 16 or over.

The residency will be led by 2 of the UK’s leading theatre artists, Phelim McDermott and Jonathan Campbell.

5. Opportunities Call for Dundee based writer

Plutot La Vie will be working on a project from January through March 2007 in Dundee. The project will involve the Hearing Voices Network. Tim Licata is looking for writers who would be interested in working with this group, one day a week, to both write material and support the group in writing their own material. This initial project will be to develop the group and develop material towards a performance later in 2007 or 2008.

Ideally, a writer from Dundee, living in Dundee or with a familiarity of the area, but we are open to all interest. This is a paid position.

6. Opportunities From Text to Performance Ten week theatre course in Edinburgh...

Chekhov can be fun! A ten week theatre course exploring scenes from the SEAGULL and THREE SISTERS as stimulus for new writing and performance styles.

Corinne Harris has worked with prestigious theatre companies around Britain including the RSC, Royal Exchange and Bristol Old Vic.


7. Opportunities Intro in Screenwriting Course Details on this Writers Factory course in Glasgow...

This is a 22 week screenwriting course to be held on Monday evenings at Glasgow University, Gilmorehill G12, University Avenue 6.30pm - 8.30pm. The course aims to take every participant from an initial premise through to a polished ten minute short film script. The course combines workshops, seminars, tutorials and screenings, which together will provide a comprehensive overview of the screenwriting process.
