Good News for the Playwrights' Studio
Dear Friends, The Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland has just recieved the news that we will be awarded Flexible Funding from the Scottish Arts Council from April 2009 – March 2011. Not only we will see a significant increase to our current funding, but the two year time span of this funding will allow us to be much more ambitious in our forward planning. Sample the talent of Scotland's emerging writers and actors as they explore and develop new plays. Presented by Playwrights' Studio and Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Gilmorehill: we have three new pieces so savour one or try them all. This is a development showing of plays from writers at an early stage in their career. The actors are all graduating students from the RSAMD. There will be a short, informal discussion event after each play looking at how theatre makers and their works progress. Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting International Playwriting Competition offering the Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting The Larry Corse Prize for The Prize: $1,000 and a production by Columbus State University Department of Theatre in the 2009-2010 school year. Eligibility: The competition is open to all. The Royal Court's Young Writers Festival has an unrivalled reputation for discovering new voices for the British stage, showcasing the very best young talent. If you are 25 or under and have an original play up your sleeve, in a drawer or burning a hole in your pocket, write it for us and send it into the Young Writers Festival competition by 31st May 2008. Your play can be of any length and on any subject. The most exciting plays will win a production at the Royal Court in spring 09. For more information see:
SWAN PLAYWRIGHTS Swan Playwrights are inviting submissions from writers for a one-hour Thriller. Two plays will be selected and performed in the main house of the Rose Theatre, Kidderminster in September 2008. Rod Hall Memorial Award 2008 The Prize The award is intended to launch a writing career - the winner will receive a £5,000 commission to write a play for renowned new writing company Paines Plough, and representation from The Rod Hall Agency. Who Can Apply The Rod Hall Memorial Award is looking for playwrights aged 18 to 30 who are not, nor have ever been, professionally represented. Writers must be UK residents and qualifying plays must be over 60 minutes running time. Eltham College Seeks Writer in Residence Eltham College is seeking a published poet, novelist or playwright to work with the English Department for one term, three days a week. This part-time residency will start in September 2008. Further details are available from: New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest The New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest is accepting scripts through 1) Enhance self-realization Robert McLellan Award for Playwriting This annual playwrighting competition was establish to commemorate the centenary of Robert McLellan's birth in celebration of his enormous contribution to Scottish Theatre. The competition calls specifically for plays writen in living Scots - any dialects, urban or rural, which have not been performed professionally as yet. Plays should contain no more than three characters and can be up to 50 minutes long. Celebrating ten successful years as a presence in British Theatre, the Award is dedicated to providing inspiration and validation for playwrights of Caribbean or African descent who are resident in the UK. The Award of £5000 is open to any playwright of Caribbean or African descent, resident in the UK, for the best new stage play in English, which need not have been produced. Each entrant may submit only one play. (Television, radio and film scripts will not be considered.) DRAMATISING SCOTLAND Saturday 31st May 2008 This conference will explore the range of dramatic representations of Scotland. Invited speakers – practitioners and academics – will address the achievements, constraints and opportunities in Scottish theatre, broadcasting and film.
