Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's May e-bulletin.

These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as many other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

At the very bottom of this bulletin is information on the Scottish Society of Playwrights and also the Playwrights Network which covers all areas of the UK.

Good News for the Playwrights' Studio

Dear Friends,

The Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland has just recieved the news that we will be awarded Flexible Funding from the Scottish Arts Council from April 2009 – March 2011.

Not only we will see a significant increase to our current funding, but the two year time span of this funding will allow us to be much more ambitious in our forward planning.

This is a landmark moment for the Playwrights' Studio and I am pleased to be able share it with all of you.

Sample the talent of Scotland's emerging writers and actors as they explore and develop new plays. Presented by Playwrights' Studio and Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Gilmorehill: we have three new pieces so savour one or try them all.

This is a development showing of plays from writers at an early stage in their career. The actors are all graduating students from the RSAMD. There will be a short, informal discussion event after each play looking at how theatre makers and their works progress.

Translation Resource

Details are available on our website for our Translation Resource.
This fund is available for producing theatre companies outside the UK to translate plays from Scotland’s playwrights specifically for a public event; production or reading.

It will be for a mechanical/literary translation into another language when the play has not previously been translated into that language.

Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting
Columbus State University

International Playwriting Competition offering the Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting

The Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting was established in 2003 by Larry Corse, Professor Emeritus of Theatre and English at Clayton State University, to encourage the development and production of new works for the stage. The prize has been awarded four times and in each of these years the competition received more than 300 plays from around the world. 

The Prize: $1,000 and a production by Columbus State University Department of Theatre in the 2009-2010 school year.

Eligibility: The competition is open to all.

The Play: 

1.  A play submitted to the competition should be finished, original, in English and must not have been previously published or performed (excluding workshop readings).
2.  The play should be full-length and should a running time between 60 and 120 minutes.
3.  The number of actors needed for the play should be between 5 and 10.

The Royal Court Young Writers Festival

The Royal Court's Young Writers Festival has an unrivalled reputation for discovering new voices for the British stage, showcasing the very best young talent. If you are 25 or under and have an original play up your sleeve, in a drawer or burning a hole in your pocket, write it for us and send it into the Young Writers Festival competition by 31st May 2008. Your play can be of any length and on any subject. The most exciting plays will win a production at the Royal Court in spring 09.

SWAN PLAYWRIGHTS
SEEK THRILLER SCRIPTS

Swan Playwrights are inviting submissions from writers for a one-hour Thriller. Two plays will be selected and performed in the main house of the Rose Theatre, Kidderminster in September 2008.

Submissions should be sent anonymously, with a cover sheet showing name and contact details of the writer to: E. Parkes, 14 Winchester Drive, Oldswinford, DY8 2LH

Please keep a copy of your script as we regret that we will be unable to return them. Should you require an acknowledgment of receipt, please enclose an S.A.E. Entry Fees: £15 (to include a year's membership of Swan Playwrights) £35 (if you would like feedback on your script)

Rod Hall Memorial Award 2008

The Rod Hall Memorial Award is presented every two years to an outstanding new playwright, in memory of Rod Hall, the visionary literary agent and founder of the Rod Hall Agency.

The Prize
The award is intended to launch a writing career - the winner will receive a £5,000 commission to write a play for renowned new writing company Paines Plough, and representation from The Rod Hall Agency.

Who Can Apply
The Rod Hall Memorial Award is looking for playwrights aged 18 to 30 who are not, nor have ever been, professionally represented. Writers must be UK residents and qualifying plays must be over 60 minutes running time.

Bruntwood Playwriting Competition
for the Royal Exchange Theatre

The Bruntwood Playwriting Competition is a unique opportunity for anyone, aged 18 or over, to enter their original, full-length stageplay in a competition which aims to reward the best plays by writers across the country.

You can be anyone, of any experience, living anywhere in the UK and Ireland. You might never have written a play before. Or, you might have written lots. The key thing is, that entry is totally anonymous, so the competition is absolutely fair and inclusive to everyone.

The Bruntwood Playwriting Competition will offer awards of £15,000 as a First Prize and a following Second Prize of £10,000 and third prize of £7,500. There will also be a special Bruntwood prize of £5,000. This competition represents one the world’s biggest awards for playwriting.

Arts Education in Practice
Professional Development Award

A new accredited professional development qualification for arts practioners in Scotland, managed by Children in Scotland and supported by the Scottish Arts Council.

The course will run from September 2008-June 2009
Cost per candidate: £400 (This fee includes all teaching, assessment and the cost of a residential weekend.)

New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest

The New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest is accepting scripts through
June 30, 2008 for new works that:

1) Enhance self-realization
2) Support peace and social justice
3) Foster new understanding of minority issues that focus on racial, ethnic and gender discrimination both in the United States and abroad
4) Empower youth to build healthy inner foundations
5) Educate to gain further insight into healthy social/emotional living
6) Shed new light on religious, spiritual, and cultural differences and issues
7) Build respect for cultural expression and identity in a world that is experiencing rapid globalization
8) Explore the widening gap between the values this country was founded on and the values we present to the world today

Robert McLellan Award for Playwriting

This annual playwrighting competition was establish to commemorate the centenary of Robert McLellan's birth in celebration of his enormous contribution to Scottish Theatre. The competition calls specifically for plays writen in living Scots - any dialects, urban or rural, which have not been performed professionally as yet.

Script Competion

Producers Declan Hill and Simon Wright have just won a fringe award for Best Encouragers of Talent, for their work developing sitcom scripts. They're now working with the Arts Theatre in the West End to promote new work and are actively looking for new scripts.

What they want to see: Sitcom scripts or character-based comedy of no more than fifteen minutes long. that are self-contained, and whose premise, situation, and characters will be immediately grasped by an audience.

The deadline for scripts is August 15th.

Celebrating ten successful years as a presence in British Theatre, the Award is dedicated to providing inspiration and validation for playwrights of Caribbean or African descent who are resident in the UK.

The Award of £5000 is open to any playwright of Caribbean or African descent, resident in the UK, for the best new stage play in English, which need not have been produced. Each entrant may submit only one play. (Television, radio and film scripts will not be considered.)

Applicants for the 2008 Award should send two copies of their play (plus a Stamped Self-Addressed Envelope for return of scripts), accompanied by a CV which includes the writer's Caribbean or African connection and a brief history of the play, to:

Gitte Kath is an internationally acclaimed poster designer, as well as theater director, actor, set designer and playwright with Teatret Moellen from Haderslev in Denmark. Gitte’s creation of performance posters is a totally integrated part of her work and the starting point for her in exploring the story. In this presentation Gitte will take the audience on a journey using her posters as a starting point for discussion about children’s theatre, storytelling and design.
