Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's April e-bulletin.

These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as many other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

At the very bottom of this bulletin is information on the Scottish Society of Playwrights and also the Playwrights Network which covers all areas of the UK.

Translation Resource

Details are available on our website for our Translation Resource.
This fund is available for producing theatre companies outside the UK to translate plays from Scotland’s playwrights specifically for a public event; production or reading.

It will be for a mechanical/literary translation into another language when the play has not previously been translated into that language.

A £60,000 prize designed not only to richly reward the best young writer in the world but also to serve as a focus for and incentive to all young writers throughout the English-speaking world.

The 2008 Award Call for Entries

The 2008 Prize is open to young writers of any nationality, from anywhere in the world, writing in English. Writers must be under 30 years of age on 3rd April 2007. The following Genres are all eligible for entry: novels, collections of short stories, poetry, screenplays, radio and theatre plays.

To be eligible a Literary Work must have been commercially published, for the first time in the English Language between 27th April 2006 and 30th April 2008. For TV writing and theatrical films the script or screenplay must have been commissioned between 27th April 2006 and 30th April 2008

Deadline
Entries are accepted from 2nd April 2007 until the deadline by the close of business on 30th April 2008

The entry fee is £100. Please make cheques or money orders payable to Dylan Thomas Prize Ltd.


New Works--Call for Proposals

The New Writing New Worlds Festival presents, New Works, a weekend of works in progress to be performed for an intimate Studio audience at GilmorehillG12 on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th of June.

New Works is now welcoming proposals from Scotland based theatre makers who would like to explore a seed of an idea and experiment with it in a supportive environment. If you have an idea you'd like to develop and would like to be part of New Works then please email a short proposal, no longer than one side A4, to Suzi Simpson, Artistic Director, at newwriting_newworlds@yahoo.co.uk

The presentation of your work in progress should last no longer than 30mins.
Deadline for proposals is Thursday 1st May.

Please note: New Works will provide the venue, the dates, a small budget and the artistic context. Those taking part would be responsible for their own creative process and management of budget.


Robin Reeves Prize for Young Writers

The Trustees of the Welsh Writers' Trust invite young writers to submit an example of their original work, which would be suitable for inclusion in the New Welsh Review. This can be poetry, fiction, drama, review or reportage - comprising complete works or excerpts from longer pieces. The winner of the Robin Reeves Prize for Young Writers will recieve £500.

Writers should be aged between 16 and 24, i.e. below 25 at the end of 2007 and should have been born in or be currently living in Wales. Entrants should submit a piece of their own original work up to 1,500 words in length. The prize-winner will be selected by a jury made up of the Trustees. Their decision will be final. Entry fee is £5.00

BBC DRAMA WRITERS ACADEMY

The next generation of TV writers are being sought by the BBC for its prestigious Drama Writers Academy, a unique course that equips writers with the skills to work on BBC flagship continuing drama programmes.

Alongside training on all aspects of drama production from editing to scheduling, students will receive direct writing experience on continuing dramas, with the aim of transmitting their finished scripts on BBC One.

Creativity, talent and a passion for telling stories are essential criteria for those applying. Applicants must have had at least one professional commission in either television, theatre, radio or film.

Applications are open from Monday 14th April until Monday 12th May.

Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting
Columbus State University

International Playwriting Competition offering the Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting

The Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting was established in 2003 by Larry Corse, Professor Emeritus of Theatre and English at Clayton State University, to encourage the development and production of new works for the stage. The prize has been awarded four times and in each of these years the competition received more than 300 plays from around the world. 

The Prize: $1,000 and a production by Columbus State University Department of Theatre in the 2009-2010 school year.

Eligibility: The competition is open to all.

The Play: 

1.  A play submitted to the competition should be finished, original, in English and must not have been previously published or performed (excluding workshop readings).
2.  The play should be full-length and should a running time between 60 and 120 minutes.
3.  The number of actors needed for the play should be between 5 and 10.

The Royal Court Young Writers Festival

The Royal Court's Young Writers Festival has an unrivalled reputation for discovering new voices for the British stage, showcasing the very best young talent. If you are 25 or under and have an original play up your sleeve, in a drawer or burning a hole in your pocket, write it for us and send it into the Young Writers Festival competition by 31st May 2008. Your play can be of any length and on any subject. The most exciting plays will win a production at the Royal Court in spring 09.

Rod Hall Memorial Award 2008

The Rod Hall Memorial Award is presented every two years to an outstanding new playwright, in memory of Rod Hall, the visionary literary agent and founder of the Rod Hall Agency.

The Prize
The award is intended to launch a writing career - the winner will receive a £5,000 commission to write a play for renowned new writing company Paines Plough, and representation from The Rod Hall Agency.

Who Can Apply
The Rod Hall Memorial Award is looking for playwrights aged 18 to 30 who are not, nor have ever been, professionally represented. Writers must be UK residents and qualifying plays must be over 60 minutes running time.

Bruntwood Playwriting Competition
for the Royal Exchange Theatre

The Bruntwood Playwriting Competition is a unique opportunity for anyone, aged 18 or over, to enter their original, full-length stageplay in a competition which aims to reward the best plays by writers across the country.

You can be anyone, of any experience, living anywhere in the UK and Ireland. You might never have written a play before. Or, you might have written lots. The key thing is, that entry is totally anonymous, so the competition is absolutely fair and inclusive to everyone.

The Bruntwood Playwriting Competition will offer awards of £15,000 as a First Prize and a following Second Prize of £10,000 and third prize of £7,500. There will also be a special Bruntwood prize of £5,000. This competition represents one the world’s biggest awards for playwriting.

New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest

The New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest is accepting scripts through
June 30, 2008 for new works that:

1) Enhance self-realization
2) Support peace and social justice
3) Foster new understanding of minority issues that focus on racial, ethnic and gender discrimination both in the United States and abroad
4) Empower youth to build healthy inner foundations
5) Educate to gain further insight into healthy social/emotional living
6) Shed new light on religious, spiritual, and cultural differences and issues
7) Build respect for cultural expression and identity in a world that is experiencing rapid globalization
8) Explore the widening gap between the values this country was founded on and the values we present to the world today

Robert McLellan Award for Playwriting

This annual playwrighting competition was establish to commemorate the centenary of Robert McLellan's birth in celebration of his enormous contribution to Scottish Theatre. The competition calls specifically for plays writen in living Scots - any dialects, urban or rural, which have not been performed professionally as yet.

In this presentation Gitte will take the audience on a journey using her posters as a starting point for discussion about children’s theatre, storytelling and design.

DRAMATISING SCOTLAND

Playwriting Courses with Fishamble

Course Descriptions:
Each course member is immersed in a range of ideas and exercises designed to develop useful skills in writing for live performance. These include: Openings, The Playwright’s Imagination, Plotting, Alternative Structures, Characterisation, the Rhythms of Language and Dialogue. As the course develops creative theatre practitioners are brought in to provide expert discussion on staging new work. Each course member is encouraged to develop their own idea through the course into a finished draft. As well as developing playwriting skills the course aims to:
• broaden conceptions of what is achievable in live performance
• encourage practical considerations of successful staging

The weekend course is particularly suitable for those who wish to immerse themselves in writing for theatre, thoroughly over a short period.
