Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's August e-bulletin.

These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as many other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

At the very bottom of this bulletin is information on the Scottish Society of Playwrights and also the Playwrights Network which covers all areas of the UK.

Fuse
Fuse is a unique Scotland wide initiative that puts new plays in front of the artistic directors at the country's top theatre venues.

Translation Resource

Details are available on our website for our Translation Resource.
This fund is available for producing theatre companies outside the UK to translate plays from Scotland’s playwrights specifically for a public event; production or reading.

It will be for a mechanical/literary translation into another language when the play has not previously been translated into that language.

The Peter Wolff Theatre Trust Supports the Whiting Award

This award is given to a play of relevance and importance to contemporary life that is judged to be of potential value to British Theatre. The award value is £6,000.

To be eligible to enter for the award the play must be:

  • an original piece of writing (no adaptations or pieces of verbatim theatre).
  • produced by a company in the subsidised sector (includes Trusts and Foundations).
  • Performed for the first time between 1 August 2007 and 31 July 2008

Please send three printed scripts and a covering letter stating the production details to the address below.

Writer Required for Community Arts Project

Manchester Library Theatre Company are currently looking for an experienced writer to deliver an exciting new play writing project for older people which will take place here at Central Library in Manchester city centre.

Applicants must have experience of delivering play writing workshops and working with people with little or no experience of creative writing. If you are interested in this opportunity please send a copy of your CV in the first instance. Due to the nature of the project the company is looking for people who are based in Greater Manchester or within easy travelling distance from Manchester city centre.

Creative Writer & Mentor Wanted
Borough of Poole Arts Development Unit

Professional writer required to work with adults with physical health conditions who have anxiety and depression as a secondary diagnosis, part of Borough of Poole Arts Development Unit's Flourish Arts and Health Programme. The writer will be experienced in working with vulnerable adults. He/she will also mentor a mid-career writer throughout the project.

Channel 4 is scouring the country for the UK’s most exciting young creative talent for the 4Talent Awards 2008. Categories include:

• Dramatic Writing (stage and screen)
• Dramatic Performance (stage, film & TV)
• Directing (film & TV)

All entrants must be under 30 on 31/12/2008. The completed online form and any posted supporting materials must be received by 5pm on Friday 29 August 2008.

Celebrating ten successful years as a presence in British Theatre, the Award is dedicated to providing inspiration and validation for playwrights of Caribbean or African descent who are resident in the UK.

The Award of £5000 is open to any playwright of Caribbean or African descent,resident in the UK, for the best new stage play in English, which need not have been produced. Each entrant may submit only one play. (Television, radio and film scripts will not be considered.)

Applicants for the 2008 Award should send two copies of their play (plus a Stamped Self-Addressed Envelope for return of scripts), accompanied by a CV which includes the writer's Caribbean or African connection and a brief history of the play, to:

Naked Stage 2008—Submissions Now Open

Naked Stage is WRiTEON's longest running, largest and best known series of staged readings. Its purpose is to provide a forum for new scriptwriting in the Cambridge region and beyond.

WRiTEON is looking for previously unperformed stage plays or sketches of up to one hour in length. There is an optional audience feedback session for the writer at the end of each evening's performance.

Robert McLellan Award for Playwriting

This annual and unique play competition was established in 2007 to commemmorate the centenary of Robert McLellan's birth in celebration of his enormous contribution to Scottish Theatre. The prize for this competition is £1000, a 2 day development workshop with a professional director and actors, leading to a rehearsed reading on the Isle of Arran at the Arran Arts Festival , November 2008 and a full scale production of the play at Oran Mor, Glasgow in March 2009.

The competition asks for plays which have not been performed professionally as yet, are 50 minutes duration, are written for a maximum of 3 characters and are written in any living Scots dialect - urban or rural.

HighTide Festival

HighTide are looking for new full-length scripts from emerging writers. Writers may submit one unproduced, unpublished full-length play. There is no restriction on subject matter. HighTide welcomes international scripts, written in English, on the basis that all selected writers are available in the UK for the dramaturgy, rehearsal and production period from January to May 2009.

The play should be sent to the address below, and must have a title page with author's name, address and telephone number. Scripts will not be returned.

Acid Theatre Playwright Competition

The Acid Theatre Playwright Competition is looking for 30-60 minute monologues or 2 handers based loosely around the theme of 'Freedom of Speech in the Theatre' but with special emphasis on religion and religious influences in society.
The winning entry will be performed / produced by AcidTheatre.

STAGE International Script Competition

S T A G E  =  Scientists Technologists and Artists Generating Exploration.
The Professional Artists Lab and the California NanoSystems Institute will collaborate internationally with professional artists to create and develop multi-media theatre pieces in which science and technology play prominent roles in content and/or form.

The STAGE International Script Competition will now become a biennial competition. The next deadline for entries is December 15, 2009. Submissions will not be accepted earlier than June 15, 2009.
