Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's December e-bulletin.

These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as any other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

Studio News covers our current activities and items of interest; Opportunities includes useful information and competitions; our Events section lists upcoming activities; and in Quick Links you can access the world wide web for news on other events and productions that we hope may be of interest to you.

The Meyer-Whitworth Award

The Playwrights' Studio Scotland is delighted to announce details of the Meyer-Whitworth Award 2007. From this year the award will be run by the Playwrights' Studio, Scotland in association with the UK Playwrights Network.

Supported by the National Theatre Foundation and with a prize fund of £10,000, the Meyer-Whitworth Award is intended to help further the careers of UK playwrights who are not yet established.

Plays nominated must be in the English language and have been produced professionally in the UK for the first time between 1 August 2006 and 30 November 2007. Candidates must be nominated by directors of professional theatre companies and must not have had more than two of their plays professionally produced (including the one submitted). Full details and application guidelines will be available on our website later this week.

Closing date 31 January 2007


SAC Writers' Bursaries
Assistance to enable published writers of literary work and playwrights to devote more time to their writing.

Minimum award is £3,000 up to a maximum of £15,000.

Next Deadline is 15 January 2007.

The National Touring Company which demonstrates the cultural experience of British Africans Celebrates in 2007, ten years in British Theatre. They are welcoming submissions of scripts from British writers of African descent for potential inclusion in their festival, Tiata Delights 07, 23-28 April 2007, at Soho Theatre.

King's Cross New Writing Award 2007
Playwrights can send up to two unpublished and unperformed scripts to:
The Courtyard Theatre, 10 York Way, King's Cross, London, N1 9AA by 2 April 2007.

The winning playwright will be contracted to The Courtyard Theatre. Each entry must include a fee of £5 per play.

BBC Radio Scotland invites scripts.
Watson's Wind-Up is a topical weekly show in need of sketches. The deadline for submissions is noon on Thursdays. The show is recorded on Friday and broadcast on Saturday. Sketches must relate to that week's news and can be anything from 20 seconds to 2 minutes long. Ideally they should have a Scottish slant, but for bigger news stories this isn't essential.

Drama Association of Wales

One Act Playwriting Competition 2007
The competition aims to encourage the writing of plays for amateur theatre in English and Welsh. There are four categories:

  • Best play for a Youth Cast (16 - 25 years)
  • Best play in the Welsh language
  • Best play in the Open Section
  • Best play from a Wales based writer

Scripts should be anonymous, and have a running time of 20-50 minutes and a minimum cast of two. The prize for each category is £200, except the Wales based writer section, where the prize is a bursary for a theatre course. Entry fee is £10. Closing date is 31 January 2007

High Tide Festival

Call for submissions
The Festival will develop and showcase the new work of young writers, directors and actors, through the mentoring and support of establishes industry professionals.
They require half hour plays, with small casts for young actors (20s). 8 plays will be selected, and of these 4 will be fully produced and 4 will have public rehearsed readings. Each play will be individually directed by experienced young directors and performed by a company of actors. The writers and directors will have the opportunity to develop their relationship and work further on the text, with the mentoring of Paul Sirett (who has worked as literary manager of the Soho Theatre and dramaturg at the RSC) and attend a series of workshops/lectures by established writer and directors.

Etruria Cafe Theatre New Playwright Competition
For writers who have never had a play produced, with a special category for writers from Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle.

Prizes: Open Competition: £100, 2 x £25
Plays by multiple writers are welcome. The length of play must be 50-90 minutes, and use 2-4 main actors with 1-6 minor support allowed. Scenery and props must be suitable for touring. Scripts must be clearly presented on A4 sheets, printed in plain font, size 14, and must be stapled, or securely clipped. Play title and page number must appear on every sheet, but not the writer's name. A separate sheet must give the play title, writer's name and contact details. Scripts will not be returned. Send SA postcard for acknowledgement of receipt and SAE for all results. Fee for each play is £4. Cheques should be made to Etruria Cafe Theatre, and sent with entries to : 66A Rowley Bank, Stafford, ST17 9BG.

Culture 2007 - call for proposals

The European Commission has announced a conditional call for proposals under the new Culture 2007 programme.

The general objective of the programme shall be "to enhance the cultural area shared by Europeans and based on a common cultural heritage through the development of cultural cooperation between the creators, cultural players and cultural institutions, of the countries taking part in the Programme with a view to encouraging the emergence of European citizenship".

Studio News

Ignite Competition Winner Announced!

Following a workshop day at the Mitchell Library, the winner of This years Ignite Competition was chosen as Karen Barclay, with her scene To Their Ugly Guardians.

Other shortlisted writers were Martin Brocklebank, Jenni Fagan, Kenny Mc Kenna, Ian Low and Claire Wingfield.

Karen will receive mentoring and support from Playwrights' Studio, Scotland to turn their scene into a full play. A work in progress reading of which will be given as part of Glasgow's Aye Write! Festival in February 2007.


Brave New Roles Award
Congratulations to Debbie Jones on being a joint winner of the Brave New Roles Award with her play The Incredible Mercy of Limpet and Leach.
The other winner was Chritina Balit with Needle. Both were awarded their prize and a commission at the Soho Theatre on Friday 24 November.
Debbie has written for television, radio and stage, winning the Kings Cross New writing Award in 2003

Interplay: Online Festival
The Online Festival is all about playwright development in both script and skin. It provides a blank virtual canvas stage - it is up to you to fill it! Young playwrights, aged 13-26, receive online tutoring and support .
