Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's July e-bulletin.

These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as many other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

At the very bottom of this bulletin is information on the Scottish Society of Playwrights and also the Playwrights Network which covers all areas of the UK.

New Staff at the Playwrights' Studio

Playwrights' Studio is pleased to welcome Claire Yspol to our office team. Claire will be joining us for 18 months as an Arts Mangement Trainee. Neil Coull, Claire Yspol, Sonja Lowe, and Julie Ellen will form the Playwrights' Studio Festival staff at the Traverse Theatre in August 2008. Do come by and say hi!



Fuse
Fuse is a unique Scotland wide initiative that puts new plays in front of the artistic directors at the country's top theatre venues.

Translation Resource

Details are available on our website for our Translation Resource.
This fund is available for producing theatre companies outside the UK to translate plays from Scotland’s playwrights specifically for a public event; production or reading.

It will be for a mechanical/literary translation into another language when the play has not previously been translated into that language.

Zeitgeist Theatre Grand Slam

Zeitgeist Theatre is seeking short, sharp and witty theatre plays for a popular and unique event in South London. Scripts must not be more than eight minutes long, require no more than five actors and have very basic lighting/sound/set requirements.

One group of actors perform each play then the audience votes for their favourite. The emphasis is on originality, variety and entertainment. Apart from a lot of fun, this is an excellent way to try out ideas on an audience before developing further.
 
PLEASE NOTE: ALL writers must be based in or around London and able to attend late-August. DEADLINE: 21st July 2008

New PlayDay for Cloud Nine

Cloud Nine Theatre Company is inviting new scripts for its latest PlayDay
project, which will see two plays chosen for performance in front of a live
audience in the autumn. Plays should be 30 minutes in length and capable of performance with a cast of four. Only previously unperformed work should be sent.

Short Plays about Elvis Wanted

New Writers Wanted at Artificial Light

Artificial Light requires new short sketches/plays for possible entry into the Emergency Festival at the Greenroom, Manchester, Sept 2008.

Interpreted or written specifically for a physical theatre style
Small, young cast
Unpaid/unfunded
Minimum props/scenery

Autumn Exchange is the key meeting place for all those involved in the performing arts for children and young people. It offers a unique and enjoyable opportunity to view a snapshot of the latest productions available by Scottish based companies, to view works in progress and discuss their development opportunities and to hear from invited guest speakers.

Imaginate has a limited number of assisted delegate packages for Autumn Exchange for students, recent graduates and emerging artists and producers in Scotland. (£10 for assisted places -normal cost £80).

Script Competion

Producers Declan Hill and Simon Wright have just won a fringe award, for Best Encouragers of Talent, for their work developing sitcom scripts. They're now working with the Arts Theatre in the West End to promote new work and are actively looking for new scripts.

What they want to see: Sitcom scripts or character-based comedy of no more than fifteen minutes long that are self-contained, and whose premise, situation,and characters will be immediately grasped by an audience.

The deadline for scripts is August 15th.

The Peter Wolff Theatre Trust Supports the Whiting Award

This award is given to a play of relevance and importance to contemporary life that is judged to be of potential value to British Theatre. The award value is £6,000.

To be eligible to enter for the award the play must be:

  • an original piece of writing (no adaptations or pieces of verbatim theatre).
  • produced by a company in the subsidised sector (includes Trusts and Foundations).
  • Performed for the first time between 1 August 2007 and 31 July 2008

Please send three printed scripts and a covering letter stating the production details to the address below.

4Talent Awards

Channel 4 is scouring the country for the UK’s most exciting young creative talent for the 4Talent Awards 2008. Categories include:

• Dramatic Writing (stage and screen)
• Dramatic Performance (stage, film & TV)
• Directing (film & TV)

Celebrating ten successful years as a presence in British Theatre, the Award is dedicated to providing inspiration and validation for playwrights of Caribbean or African descent who are resident in the UK.

The Award of £5000 is open to any playwright of Caribbean or African descent,resident in the UK, for the best new stage play in English, which need not have been produced. Each entrant may submit only one play. (Television, radio and film scripts will not be considered.)

Applicants for the 2008 Award should send two copies of their play (plus a Stamped Self-Addressed Envelope for return of scripts), accompanied by a CV which includes the writer's Caribbean or African connection and a brief history of the play, to:

Robert McLellan Award for Playwriting

This annual and unique play competition was established in 2007 to commemmorate the centenary of Robert McLellan's birth in celebration of his enormous contribution to Scottish Theatre. The prize for this competition is £1000, a 2 day development workshop with a professional director and actors, leading to a rehearsed reading on the Isle of Arran at the Arran Arts Festival , November 2008 and a full scale production of the play at Oran Mor, Glasgow in March 2009.

The competition asks for plays which have not been performed professionally as yet, are 50 minutes duration, are written for a maximum of 3 characters and are written in any living Scots dialect - urban or rural.

HighTide Festival

HighTide are looking for new full-length scripts from emerging writers. Writers may submit one unproduced, unpublished full-length play. There is no restriction on subject matter. HighTide welcomes international scripts, written in English, on the basis that all selected writers are available in the UK for the dramaturgy, rehearsal and production period from January to May 2009.

The play should be sent to the address below, and must have a title page with author's name, address and telephone number. Scripts will not be returned.

Acid Theatre Playwright Competition

The Acid Theatre Playwright Competition is looking for 30-60 minute monologues or 2 handers based loosely around the theme of 'Freedom of Speech in the Theatre' but with special emphasis on religion and religious influences in society.

Soho Theatre presents this follow up open access workshop led by Jennifer Farmer. Handle With Care II will focus specifically on the challenges of creating a dramatic piece from the stories and experiences of vulnerable groups.
