These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as many other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

At the very bottom of this bulletin is information on the Scottish Society of Playwrights and also the Playwrights Network which covers all areas of the UK.

The Edinburgh Festivals draw people from all over the world to enjoy an extraordinary range of arts activity. As the home country of these festivals Scotland is uniquely placed to share the achievements of its artists with visiting international theatre professionals as well as our local audiences. The Playwrights’ Studio promotes and develops the work of Scotland’s writers for live performance and during August 2009 we will be based in the Traverse Theatre bar.

We are there at our Bookshop and Information Point to help you find scripts for reading or future production, performances, contacts for playwrights and also other playwriting centred activity.

At the Mock Turtle we are hosting a series of Writers' Converse events, featuring playwrights and other theatre artists involved in the Edinburgh Festials, where you can be part of a small group of people in a relaxed but informative conversation. Spaces at these events are limited so book soon to avoid dissappointment!

Applications are Now Open for the Playwrights' Studio's
2009/2010 Mentoring Session


 

The Playwrights' Studio, Scotland is now accepting applications for our 2009/2010 Mentoring Session. Every year the Playwrights’ Studio offers an opportunity for new playwrights to be mentored by established playwrights. This is an amazing chance to improve your writing skills and gain valuable insights into the playwriting process.

Eligible Applicants
You should be an emerging playwright, living in Scotland or from Scotland and living elsewhere, with a particular play you hope to develop during your mentoring time. You do not need to have been produced in order to qualify.

You should be available from October 2009-March 2010 to work on your script regularly. Mentees will be matched with a mentor in October 2009 and will remain in communication with this mentor over the six month working period.

To Apply Please Send:

  • a cover letter explaining why you would like to be mentored
  • two ten-page extracts of your writing
  • a synopsis of each work from which the extracts have come
  • your current contact details
  • a brief biography detailing your writing experience to date

Fuse
Fuse is a unique Scotland wide initiative that makes information about new plays available to the artistic directors at the country's top theatre venues. Plays submitted to Fuse will be read and critiqued annonymously by theatre professionals. This feedback is made available free of charge to the playwright.

Scottish Radio Lab
Location: Scotland, UK
Deadline: 17 July 2009

The Scottish Book Trust and BBC Scotland Radio Drama are now planning the next Radio Lab. This Lab is particularly aimed at emerging and established writers who are already working in other media. It is open to poets, prose writers, and dramatists.

The Lab will be run over five days and participants must be available to attend throughout the duration of the Lab. The Lab will include a mixture of practical workshops and projects and talks from experienced radio producers and writers. The Lab will also include a day during which writers will have the chance to hear their work being rehearsed and recorded by professional actors.

The Lab will be based in Glasgow and Edinburgh and will take place on the following days:

Friday 11 September
Monday 14 September
Monday 28 September
Tuesday 6 October

This opportunity is only open to those living and working in Scotland who have been professionally published, or have had a professional production of their work.

Applicants will need to supply the following:

  • A proposal for an original radio play
  • An explanation of why you want to write it
  • Two sample scenes of the play
  • An extract from your published work
  • A CV

Total Theatre Awards 2009
Location: Scotland, UK
Deadline: 31 July 2009

Total Theatre Awards are given to professional artists and companies presenting work at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Work registered for an Award can be new to this year's Fringe or previously presented/toured, work of artists/companies. The award is intended to honour work from professional artists and companies at various stages of their professional development from the UK and other places in the world. The award does not consider work by student companies.

Entries for the Awards 2009:
Registering a show for a Total Theatre Award is an open access process – anyone can register a show appearing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2009. Artists, companies, producers, programmers or venues can propose work they are presenting. Registrations should be made using the official entry form.

Imaginate Sunday Social
Location: Scotland, UK
Deadline: 3 August 2009

The next Imaginate Sunday Social will take place at the Traverse Theatre on Sunday 13th September 2009.

The Sunday Social is a simple idea: artists are given 15 minutes each, basic technical support (approx. 30 mins get in and technical time) and an audience, to try out ideas for performances for children and young people. Artists and audiences will then be given the opportunity to share feedback, thoughts and opinions. Performances will take place in Traverse 2.

McLellan Award 2009 for plays in living Scots.
Location: Scotland
Deadline: 15 August 2009

The McLellan Award Play Competition is now in its third year and going from strength to strength. The competition is open to all. Plays must be in a living Scots dialect – urban or rural – though they may be set in any period. The running time should be a minimum of 40 minutes and a maximum of 50 minutes and the play should be for up to 3 actors. The rules state that the play must not have had a previous professional production, though it need not be new and submissions will be accepted from previous competitions. The closing date for entries is 15th August 2009.

The winning playwright of the 2009 competition will receive prize money of £1000 as well as the McLellan Award 2009 created by sculptor, Marvin Elliot and, funding permitting, the opportunity to workshop their play with Nutshell Theatre Company culminating in a performance reading at the McLellan Festival 2009 and a further performance in Glasgow in 2010.

Writers Bursaries-Unplugged and Unleashed 2009/10

FST and the Scottish Arts Council are delighted to announce the launch of Unleashed and Unplugged 2009 – two bursaries for creative artists working in Scottish theatre. The bursaries, Unleashed(£25,000) and Unplugged(£5,000) offer a unique opportunity to support two theatre artists to develop their potential by exploring, evolving and experimenting in their practice. 

The bursaries will enable two artists, currently working in Scottish theatre (whether freelance or employed) to disconnect from their regular routine or job and give them time to explore and consider new or alternative ways of approaching their thinking and practice. The awards are open to all Scottish-based theatre artists (directors, performers, designers, choreographers, technicians, writers, dramaturges, multi-media artists, producers) who have reached a point in their career where time out to re-evaluate their own process and practice would be of creative benefit. Unleashed is aimed at established practitioners, and Unplugged at mid-career.

Magnetic North Presents: Open Source

Magnetic North are delighted to announce the launch of their new project Open Source. An online Audience Engagement Project supported by the Scottish Arts Council, Open Source will be a Scotland-based internet community. Invited members will get an exclusive, interactive insight into how Magnetic North shows are created, from initial idea to curtain up, and have the chance to contribute their own feedback.

Magnetic North are currently seeking members from Edinburgh, Fife (inc Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline and Glenrothes) and Dumfries and Galloway. They are hoping to keep Open Source as open as possible by bringing together an eclectic group of people- you don’t have to be involved in theatre or a digital whiz to take part!

Sussex Playwrights' Club Competition

Sussex Playwrigts' Club have launched their 2009 Full-Length Play Competition 2009, for stage plays of ninety minutes duration. The first prize is £250, plus a reading of the winning play at a meeting of the Playwrights' Club. Second and third prize winners will recieve £150 and £100 respectively. Entry fee of £5.

In Company Theatre-Writers Wanted

In Company Theatre presents The Off Cut Festival, a short play festival of new writing. Writers are invited to submit plays of no more than 15 minutes, with a maximum 4 actors. 24 shorts are chosen and performed over two weeks at The Old Red Lion Theatre.  The audience vote to find the final 8.

These 8 will be presented in the finals week in front of a professional panel to win a one week production package at Old Red Lion Theatre.

The Alfred Fagon Award
Location: UK
Deadline: 1 August 2009

The Alfred Fagon Award is the pre-eminent Award for playwrights of African and Caribbean descent. It was established in 1996 in memory of the late Jamaican playwright and actor, Alfred Fagon.

In 2009 the winner will be awarded £5,000 in recognition of their outstanding achievement in the art of playwriting. Already an annual feature in the theatre calendar, this high profile Award will be presented to the recipient at the Cottesloe, National Theatre followed by a staged reading at the end of November 2009.

To enter, you will need to submit your play, a CV, a brief synopsis of your entry, and confirmation of Caribbean and/or African heritage as well as your residency in the UK.

HighTide Festival

HighTide are looking to produce new scripts from emerging writers for the fourth HighTide Festival, which will take place in May 2010. Writers may submit one unproduced full-length play. The deadline for plays arriving is 1st August 2009.

Script Submissions Invited

hotINK, an annual festival of plays, presented at the Tisch School of the Arts by the Department of Drama, is currently inviting script submissions from playwrights.

Submission Guidelines: Full-length plays that have not had productions in the U.S. are preferred but one-acts will be considered.  The competition is currently unable to consider musicals.  All scripts must be submitted in English. Due to the volume of plays received, one script submission per author will be considered; if more than one script is sent, neither will be considered.  

In addition to the play, all submissions must include: contact information, a writing resume/CV, a brief synopsis of the play, a character list and brief description of roles.

Please note: Any submissions that do not include all the above materials will not be considered.

Wild Orchid Theatre Calls for Plays

Dedicated to performing exciting new writing in unconventional theatre spaces, Wild Orchid Theatre is seeking new plays to stage in its December production at Sharpe's Pottery Museum, South Derbyshire.

Open to anyone living or working in the East or West Midlands, plays should have a light-hearted/humorous Christmas theme, require a maximum of four actors, and be no longer than fifteen minutes.

Events

Creative Networking in Glasgow and Edinburgh

There is a creative vibe being nurtured in Glasgow and Edinburgh at the moment. Serious writers, producers, directors and actors are beginning to network and work together on a regular basis. The hub of this activity is the CCA on Sauchiehall Street, where several workshops are being run every month.

Scottish Screenwriters meet on the first Monday of every month and welcome talks from industry guests, as well as workshop members' scripts. The Edinburgh Group usually meets on the second Thursday of every month. Write Camera Action, meets on the third Monday of every month and gives writers the opportunity to see their work performed by trained actors.

Visual Impact: Writing for Screen

Using a mixture of film clips, writing exercises and practical advice, this course will encourage writers to think visually about stories, characters, delivering information and developing a visual style. It will also include a session with award-winning novelist and dramatist, Helen Cross, whose book My Summer of Love became a BAFTA award-winning feature film – and whose first original screenplay, Stratford Road, is currently in development with Red Room Films and the UK Film Council.

The Absolute Beginner’s Guide to How to Write a Screenplay

Writer Residencies
The Fielding Programme

The Fielding Programme is a specialist residency programme for new and early career writers. It offers the opportunity to develop professionally in the spectacular and inspiring surroundings of Cove Park on the west coast of Scotland. Having sold out the Spring programme, they are now taking bookings for this Autumn.

These unique residencies provide a special period of undisturbed time, along with informal one-to-one meetings with writer Polly Clark and workshops with a small group of fellow residents. Private and high quality accommodation, along with opportunities to escape the page in the evenings and enjoy the company of other writers and the hosts, complete the package.
