As the home country of these festivals Scotland is uniquely placed to share the achievements of its artists with visiting international theatre professionals as well as our local audiences. The Playwrights’ Studio promotes and develops the work of Scotland’s writers for live performance and during August 2010 we will be based in the Traverse Theatre Bar. We are there at our Bookshop and Information Point to help you with scripts for reading or future production, plays by Scottish playwrights being performed at this years' Festival, contacts for playwrights and also other playwriting centred activity. At Fringe Central Playwrights' Studio, Scotland, in association with Made in Scotland, are hosting a series of lunchtime conversations Let's Talk Over Lunch. Bring your lunch and join us for a series of lunchtime conversations with artists from the Made in Scotland programme. We'll be exploring the ideas behind their work and challenging them to talk about what inspired their projects.

Fuse Script Reading Service Fuse is a unique Scotland wide initiative that makes information about new plays available to the artistic directors at the country's top theatre venues. Plays submitted to Fuse will be read and critiqued annonymously by theatre professionals. This feedback is made available free of charge to the playwright. Forge of the Wordsmiths - Call for Proposals Forge of the Wordsmiths aims to build a writing community in Scotland where exciting things can happen. They have created a new series of writing club nights, cabarets and other exciting happenings. They will be showcasing writing of all kinds, whether songs, spoken word, poetry, prose, screen, plays or something altogether different that doesn't have a name yet! 2010 Total Theatre Awards Total Theatre Location: Edinburgh, Scotland Deadline: 30 July 2010 The Total Theatre Awards at The Edinburgh Fringe were first presented in 1997 to raise the profile of physical and visual theatre. Now a well-established event at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, they honour those pushing at the boundaries of traditional theatre and the best in physical and visual performance. The Total Theatre Awards bring together two different teams of academics, critics, presenters and theatre artists to assess and then judge shows produced at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Applications are open for any professional company presenting work at the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Student companies are not eligible. Plays should be for a cast of up to 5 actors, without doubling, with a running time of between 40 and 90 minutes. The winning playwright will receive prize money of £1000 as well as the McLellan Award 2010 created by sculptor, Marvin Elliot and, funding permitting, the opportunity to workshop their play with Nutshell Theatre Company culminating in a script in hand performance at the McLellan Arts Festival in September 2010. Previous winners include Shetland writer, Jacqui Clarke and young Ayrshire writer, Fiona Connor. The line-up includes legendary writers and thinkers, joining together for seventeen days of entertainment, discussion and pure inspiration. Be Be part of the world's greatest festival of ideas. This year, a new mini-festival, Unbound, invites writers to try out new approaches to discussing their writing and their ideas. Unbound provides a mix of amazing debut authors and renowned writers who wish to try out something different. Highland Arts Programme - Applications Open Creative Scotland, The Highland Council & Highlands and Islands Enterprise Location: Scotland, UK Deadline: 27 August 2010 Creative Scotland, The Highland Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise have established a new Highland Arts Programme to support and invest in the creativity of artists in the Highlands. All forms of writing are invited: autobiography and memoirs; creative responses to events and experiences; drama; graphic artwork (monochrome only); poetry; political and cultural commentary and satire; short fiction; travel writing or any other creative prose may be submitted, but not full-length plays or novels, though self-contained extracts are acceptable. The Scottish Book Trust Mentoring Scheme - Applications Open The Scottish Book Trust Location: Scotland, UK Deadline: 8 October 2010 The Scottish Book Trust Mentoring Scheme is aimed at established and emergent writers, playwrights, screenwriters and author/illustrators who have a specific project on which they'd like some dedicated support. They match four successful applicants with another writer or industry professional with appropriate experience, and support them as they work together over an intensive period of nine months. The Mentoring Scheme is open to writers and illustrators who have had work commercially published, and playwrights and screenwriters whose work has been professionally produced. Writers must live and work in Scotland.
FST Professional Development Programme 2010/11 Federation of Scottish Theatre (FST) Location: Scotland, UK Deadline: 15 October 2010 FST is delighted to announce the 2010/11 rounds of the FST Professional Development Programmes: Unplugged & Unleashed Together with the Scottish Arts Council FST will be offering two bursaries for creative artists working in Scottish theatre. The bursaries, Unleashed (£25,000) and Unplugged (£5,000) offer a unique opportunity to support two theatre artists to develop their potential by exploring, evolving and experimenting in their practice. The awards are open to all Scottish-based theatre artists (directors, performers, designers, choreographers, technicians, writers, dramaturges, multi-media artists, producers) who have reached a point in their career where time out to re-evaluate their own process and practice would be of creative benefit. The Script 2011 - New Writing Competition MokitaGrit Productions Location: London, UK Deadline: 11 September 2010 Critically acclaimed MokitaGrit Productions, one of the most prolific independent production houses in the UK, is on the lookout for the best in new writing for its competition, The Script 2011. Scripts with complex, engaging text and the potential for multi or mixed-media production are required. The 35th International Student Playscript Competition The World Student Drama Trust Location: International Deadline: 30 November 2010 The International Student Playscript Competition (ISPC) has been celebrating and promoting new writing in the theatre by students since 1976. It is an exciting opportunity spanning the globe. The ISPC is unique -there are no restrictions on form, content, length, number of characters or locations; every entry receives helpful, encouraging but honest appraisal; and there is no limit to how many scripts any student can enter. The successful submission receives a cash prize of £1,000, and a highly rated rehearsed reading at the National Student Drama Festival. Do you have a play script you would like to test out in front of a supportive audience that will give honest feedback? The First 20 Minutes gives new writers a chance to do just that. Every two months new writers can show their work in progress in a fringe venue in central London. Writer's Avenue will choose three contrasting plays. The first twenty minutes of each play will be performed in front of an audience that will give written feedback which will be given to the writer. The plays with positive feedback will go on to have a rehearsed reading. In 2011 they will select up to six writers from the 2010 series of The First 20 Minutes to compete for the chance to have their full length play produced at a London fringe venue. This will be another chance for the writer to receive feedback from the audience and gain industry exposure.
