Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's July e-bulletin.

These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as many other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

At the very bottom of this bulletin is information on the Scottish Society of Playwrights.

Writers Converse

Eavesdrop on our special guests as they chat about anything from mountains to their musical tastes. Guests over the festival will include David Greig, Linda McLean, Stephen Greenhorn and Rona Munro.

Inspire sessions
Friday 17 and Monday 20 August 10.30am

Introductory guidance for aspiring playwrights and interested members of the public. No experience necessary.

Wednesday 22 and Saturday 25 August 10.30am
Further skills and ideas for those with some experience of playwriting. Experienced professional playwrights will share their thinking on writing plays.

BBC Scotland Radio Drama - Radio Play “The Playwright's Studio!”
Tuesday 21 and Friday 24 August 10.30am
An insight into radio drama with extracts from new plays and hot tips from radio producers.

Play Appreciation Workshops

Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 August 10.30am
For audience members and readers of plays. Run by Stephen Barnes, this workshop will develop the ability of participants to read a play, understand how it works and be more articulate in their conversations about it afterwards, so they can get the best out a new play.

Writers’ Forum
Tuesday 28 August 7.30pm
A very popular informal event. Come, join us and fellow writers for a drink and discussion on the hot topics of the day. Previous topics have included Writer or Auteur? -As the playwright can your personal creative vision be maintained in the production process? and ‘Is there a place for the playwright in making work for children and young people when the process isn’t script led?’

Up Close:Aberdeen

8 September 2007

Up Close:Aberdeen in association with His Majesty's Theatre Aberdeen

This one day event will offer writers in Aberdeen the opportunity to take part in Inspire Sessions, Script Surgeries, meetings with Playwrights Studio staff, access to our book shop, and a Plays off the Page reading.

Activities will include:

  • Two 'Inspire' introduction to playwriting workshops, one for beginners, and one for more experienced writers.
  • Up to six face to face script surgery meetings between developing playwrights and professional playwrights, where the developing playwrights’ scripts will have been read in advance.
  • Career development meetings with Julie Ellen Creative Director of the Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland
  • Access to published plays by Scottish playwrights and information on Scotland’s playwrights from a play sales stall.
  • Up to two Plays off the Page rehearsed readings and discussions. A rehearsed reading and after reading discussion of up to two locally linked writers’ work following an intensive day of rehearsal and development with those writers.

The Singles: New Scottish Drama From BBC Scotland and Scottish Screen

BBC Scotland Television Drama and Scottish Screen are launching a new slate of television plays - an exciting returnable brand of 60 minute single films of up to a maximum of £450,000 for broadcast on BBC Scotland.

Their goal is to produce drama from Scotland that will stand up against the very best of drama from around the globe.  Ideas that could spin off into series are particularly welcomed.

All ideas must be submitted by a producer with a track record in film or television.

Your submission should include a detailed outline of your idea (4 / 5 pages approx.) along with a writing sample, producer’s CV / company resume and details of any other key talent or relevant information.

The Brian Way Award 2008
An award for Playwrights who write for young people

Submitted plays should be suitable for young people up to the age of eighteen and be at least forty-five minutes long. They must have been produced professionally between 1 July 2006 and 31 August 2007. This may be a first, second or third production of a play written within the past ten years. Previously submitted plays will not be considered.

• The value of the Award is £6,000, with a runner-up Award of £1,000.
Winners announced April 2008.

Scottish Eco Prize for Creativity 2007- Call for Entries

This Prize is awarded for a creative work in Scotland which positively and imaginatively inspires people to be environmentally-friendly and adopt greener lifestyles.

There are two awards: £1,000 for Established Talent, which includes established individual artists and creative company entries, and £1,000 for Emerging Talent.

Flesh Pot Theatre- One Act Play Showcase

London based theatre company Flesh Pot Theatre are looking to source one act plays for performance at The Devonshire Arms in Kensington. They are currently favouring quirky comedies.

Plays should have no more than four characters, or have the ability for actors to double up, and should be 30-40mins in length.

The company are unable to pay writers for their material, unless it is being performed, at which time, depending on door sales- they can pay a nominal royalties fee.
Any material not used will be returned.


Acid Theatre - looking for a monologue

AcidTheatre are looking for a radical 30-60 minute monologue for a male Actor, based around the theme of Freedom of Speech in the Theatre.

"It is a legitimate function of art to provoke debate and sometimes to express controversial ideas. A genuinely free, pluralist society would celebrate this aspect of our culture. Those who use violent means to silence it must be vigorously opposed." - excerpt from an open letter supporting the writer of Behzti.

The winning entry will be optioned for production by AcidTheatre for £250.

The Oldham Coliseum Theatre script reading

The Coliseum employs a reader to read all submitted scripts. If a script is submitted the writer will receive a written report on their work within approximately four months. A stamped self-addressed envelope should also be sent for return of the script, along with a SAE for acknowledgement of receipt, if required.

All scripts submitted to the reader must:

  • Be clearly typed
  • Be printed using one side of A4 for each page
  • Contain a page of casting requirements
  • Contain a brief synopsis

Ten in a Bed Theatre

Ten In A Bed Theatre seek new theatre writing to premiere as rehearsed readings at their regular monthly event in the Clerkenwell Theatre.

If you are a budding or emerging theatre writer with a script that you would like produced as a rehearsed reading, they want to hear from you.
Ten In A Bed Theatre can only accept scripts submitted by mail. As well as plays, they will also consider excerpts, works-in-progress, sketches, sit-coms, and radio plays. As they are dedicated to new writing, they cannot consider any work that has received a full professional production.

Paint Pictures on Radio- Writing for Radio Course

20-25 August 2007
Moniack Mhor, Scotland's Creative Writing Centre

The tutors will explore the basics of writing drama, focusing on character, dialogue and structure. During the week, each participant will create a short radio piece, which will be recorded at Moniack.

Course Tutors:

Linda Cracknell has written plays, adaptations, abridgements and short stories for BBC Radio Four. Her short fiction collection, Life Drawing (11:9), was shortlisted for the Saltire First Book of the Year award. 

Lu Kemp is a BBC Scotland radio drama producer, developing and directing plays for BBC Radio 3 and 4. Recent work includes The Receptionist by Ali Smith.

David Neville
has been a BBC radio drama producer for eleven years. He also writes for radio, theatre and educational projects.  He will be the guest reader for this course

Forest Fringe Studio- Call for Script Proposals

The Forest Studio, Edinburgh have a number of slots available for rehearsed readings of new plays during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Red Planet Prize 2007

An annual prize for the best and brightest screenwriters. The winner will receive:

- Representation

- A script commission for Red Planet Pictures

For the first round, they're looking for the first ten pages of the script, a half page synopsis, and a half page biog of the writer. Sending complete screenplays for the first round will result in disqualification. Only one entry can be made per person. Full scripts for those who've made it through the first round will be requested by Red Planet Pictures in October 2007.

The final short listed candidates will be contacted in December 2007 for a workshop day and the winner will be announced following the workshop.

Face2Face with Tony Jordan

BBC writersroom in association with The Royal Court Theatre are holding an open and free event in London on the 11 July 2007, where Tony Jordan, TV scriptwriter (Eastenders, Holby City, Life on Mars, Hustle), will talk with Kate Rowland, the BBC's Creative Director of New Writing, about creating, writing, and sustaining popular television drama series.

The Doric Book Initiatve

This Doric initiative is a three-way partnership between Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council and Moray Council.
They are looking for help to create a Doric Book.

- Poems should be written in Doric to appeal to children of 8–14 years old.
- Poems should be either:-
an irreverent or affectionate verse about a fictional character
a verse about a place of interest in the North-East.
