These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as many other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

At the very bottom of this bulletin is information on the Scottish Society of Playwrights and also the Playwrights Network which covers all areas of the UK.

Sample the talent of Scotland's emerging writers and actors as they explore and develop new plays. Presented by Playwrights' Studio and Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Gilmorehill: we have three new pieces; so savour one or try them all.

This is a development showing of plays from writers at an early stage in their career. The actors are all graduating students from the RSAMD. There will be a short, informal discussion event after each play looking at how theatre makers and their works progress.

Translation Resource

Details are available on our website for our Translation Resource.
This fund is available for producing theatre companies outside the UK to translate plays from Scotland’s playwrights specifically for a public event; production or reading.

It will be for a mechanical/literary translation into another language when the play has not previously been translated into that language.

Lecturer in Creative Writing & Scriptwriting

The University of Derby seeks a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing and Scriptwriting. The lecturer will teach, as well as undertake curriculum development and research in relation to programmes which take a reflexive theory/practice approach.  Applications from those with expertise in media theory, media history, radio studies, on-line journalism, scriptwriting, writing and new technologies or creative writing workshops, will be particularly welcome.

The Gunslinger Theatre Co. will be developing a series of 5-10 minute short, self contained plays over the coming months. Writers who live in Edinburgh and would be interested in working with the company on developing these pieces are invited to come to the performance below and get a flavour of their work.

International Playwriting Festival 2008

Now in its 23rd year, the International Playwriting Festival is currently accepting entries for 2008. Plays from all over the world are received for the competition and judged by a panel of distinguished theatre practitioners. The best selected plays will then be showcased at the Festival weekend on 22 & 23 November.

The IPF also exchanges productions with International partners Extra Candoni of Italy and Theatro Ena of Cyprus.

New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest

The New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest is accepting scripts through
June 30, 2008 for new works that:

1) Enhance self-realization
2) Support peace and social justice
3) Foster new understanding of minority issues that focus on racial, ethnic and gender discrimination both in the United States and abroad
4) Empower youth to build healthy inner foundations
5) Educate to gain further insight into healthy social/emotional living
6) Shed new light on religious, spiritual, and cultural differences and issues
7) Build respect for cultural expression and identity in a world that is experiencing rapid globalization

North West Writing Competition

The purpose of the Northwest Writing Competition is to encourage anyone who would like to write to have a go. Winning short plays and stories will be performed/read at the Wyre Writing and Performance Festival in September at Thornton Little Theatre. Entry is free and open to all writers in the North West.

Sir Peter Ustinov
Television Scriptwriting Award

The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation awards the Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award each year. The competition is designed to motivate non-American novice writers under the age of 30, and offer them the recognition and encouragement that might lead to a successful career in television scriptwriting.

Entrants are asked to create a completed half-hour to one-hour English-language television drama script for a family audience.  The Winner receives $2,500 and an invitation to the International Emmy Awards Gala in November.

The deadline for submissions is July 15th.

Zeitgeist Theatre Grand Slam

Zeitgeist Theatre is seeking short, sharp and witty theatre plays for a popular and unique event in South London. Scripts must not be more than eight minutes long, require no more than five actors and have very basic lighting/sound/set requirements.

One group of actors perform each play then the audience votes for their favourite. The emphasis is on originality, variety and entertainment. Apart from a lot of fun, this is an excellent way to try out ideas on an audience before developing further.
 
PLEASE NOTE: ALL writers must be based in or around London and able to attend late-August. DEADLINE: 21st July 2008

New PlayDay for Cloud Nine

Cloud Nine Theatre Company is inviting new scripts for its latest PlayDay
project, which will see two plays chosen for performance in front of a live
audience in the autumn. Plays should be 30 minutes in length and capable of performance with a cast of four. Only previously unperformed work should be sent.

Script Competion

Producers Declan Hill and Simon Wright have just won a fringe award, for Best Encouragers of Talent, for their work developing sitcom scripts. They're now working with the Arts Theatre in the West End to promote new work and are actively looking for new scripts.

What they want to see: Sitcom scripts or character-based comedy of no more than fifteen minutes long that are self-contained, and whose premise, situation,and characters will be immediately grasped by an audience.

The deadline for scripts is August 15th.

Celebrating ten successful years as a presence in British Theatre, the Award is dedicated to providing inspiration and validation for playwrights of Caribbean or African descent who are resident in the UK.

The Award of £5000 is open to any playwright of Caribbean or African descent,resident in the UK, for the best new stage play in English, which need not have been produced. Each entrant may submit only one play. (Television, radio and film scripts will not be considered.)

Applicants for the 2008 Award should send two copies of their play (plus a Stamped Self-Addressed Envelope for return of scripts), accompanied by a CV which includes the writer's Caribbean or African connection and a brief history of the play, to:

Robert McLellan Award for Playwriting

This annual and unique play competition was established in 2007 to commemmorate the centenary of Robert McLellan's birth in celebration of his enormous contribution to Scottish Theatre. The prize for this competition is £1000, a 2 day development workshop with a professional director and actors, leading to a rehearsed reading on the Isle of Arran at the Arran Arts Festival , November 2008 and a full scale production of the play at Oran Mor, Glasgow in March 2009.

The competition asks for plays which have not been performed professionally as yet, are 50 minutes duration, are written for a maximum of 3 characters and are written in any living Scots dialect - urban or rural.

Handle With Care II

Soho Theatre presents this follow up open access workshop led by Jennifer Farmer. Handle With Care II will focus specifically on the challenges of creating a dramatic piece from the stories and experiences of vulnerable groups.
