Sample the talent of Scotland's emerging writers and actors as they explore and develop new plays. Presented by Playwrights' Studio and Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Gilmorehill: we have three new pieces; so savour one or try them all. This is a development showing of plays from writers at an early stage in their career. The actors are all graduating students from the RSAMD. There will be a short, informal discussion event after each play looking at how theatre makers and their works progress. Lecturer in Creative Writing & Scriptwriting The University of Derby seeks a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing and Scriptwriting. The lecturer will teach, as well as undertake curriculum development and research in relation to programmes which take a reflexive theory/practice approach. Applications from those with expertise in media theory, media history, radio studies, on-line journalism, scriptwriting, writing and new technologies or creative writing workshops, will be particularly welcome. The Gunslinger Theatre Co. will be developing a series of 5-10 minute short, self contained plays over the coming months. Writers who live in Edinburgh and would be interested in working with the company on developing these pieces are invited to come to the performance below and get a flavour of their work. “A Fish Rots From The Head” by Kathleen Marshall, on 28 June (7.30pm) at the Forest Studio (upstairs), 3 Bristo Place, Edinburgh. Free admission International Playwriting Festival 2008 Now in its 23rd year, the International Playwriting Festival is currently accepting entries for 2008. Plays from all over the world are received for the competition and judged by a panel of distinguished theatre practitioners. The best selected plays will then be showcased at the Festival weekend on 22 & 23 November. The IPF also exchanges productions with International partners Extra Candoni of Italy and Theatro Ena of Cyprus. Sir Peter Ustinov Entrants are asked to create a completed half-hour to one-hour English-language television drama script for a family audience. Zeitgeist Theatre Grand Slam Zeitgeist Theatre is seeking short, sharp and witty theatre plays for a popular and unique event in South London. Scripts must not be more than eight minutes long, require no more than five actors and have very basic lighting/sound/set requirements. One group of actors perform each play then the audience votes for their favourite. The emphasis is on originality, variety and entertainment. Apart from a lot of fun, this is an excellent way to try out ideas on an audience before developing further.

Celebrating ten successful years as a presence in British Theatre, the Award is dedicated to providing inspiration and validation for playwrights of Caribbean or African descent who are resident in the UK. The Award of £5000 is open to any playwright of Caribbean or African descent,resident in the UK, for the best new stage play in English, which need not have been produced. Each entrant may submit only one play. (Television, radio and film scripts will not be considered.) For more information about the award visit the website: Female Playwrights With New Scripts Wanted Velvet Ensemble aims to facilitate the work of women playwrights, directors, actors, stage managers, set, costume, lighting and sound designers. Deadline for submissions: Ongoing Robert McLellan Award for Playwriting This annual and unique play competition was established in 2007 to commemmorate the centenary of Robert McLellan's birth in celebration of his enormous contribution to Scottish Theatre. The prize for this competition is £1000, a 2 day development workshop with a professional director and actors, leading to a rehearsed reading on the Isle of Arran at the Arran Arts Festival , November 2008 and a full scale production of the play at Oran Mor, Glasgow in March 2009. The competition asks for plays which have not been performed professionally as yet, are 50 minutes duration, are written for a maximum of 3 characters and are written in any living Scots dialect - urban or rural. Dealing With Writing Human Behaviour in Action Handle With Care II Soho Theatre presents this follow up open access workshop led by Jennifer Farmer. Handle With Care II will focus specifically on the challenges of creating a dramatic piece from the stories and experiences of vulnerable groups. The session will offer practical ways in which to address some of the questions that writers face when creating such work; whose story is being told and why; is it being truthful; how to artistically engage with personal material; how to write for vulnerable groups AND theatre audiences. Writing Theatre for Younger Audiences: Totleigh Barton Arvon Centre, Sheepwash, Devon This course will have an international flavour and draw on best European practice by seeking to uncover what is at the heart of the best work, look for its roots and trace the soul journey of the Child at its centre. The focus will be on developing and deepening your own writing practice through workshops, one-to-one tutorials, readings, work ‘on the floor’ and private writing time. MA Writing for Performance University of Huddersfield Bursary A £2000 bursary will be awarded for this course.
