These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as many other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

At the very bottom of this bulletin is information on the Scottish Society of Playwrights.

Scotland's Playwrights at the Edinburgh Festivals

Once again we will be compiling a list of all of the plays on in Edinburgh in August by Scottish or Scotland based playwrights.

If your play will be produced as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, please let us know by emailing suzi@playwrightsstudio.co.uk or by calling 0141 3324403, and we will include you in our listings.

The list will be available on the back of our festival flyers as well as on our website.

Play Sales at the Royal Lyceum Theatre

From 10 July a selection of texts will be available from the foyer of the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. There will be a link in the next ebullein with a full list of titles.

The Singles: New Scottish Drama From BBC Scotland and Scottish Screen

BBC Scotland Television Drama and Scottish Screen are launching a new slate of television plays - an exciting returnable brand of 60 minute single films of up to a maximum of £450,000 for broadcast on BBC Scotland.

Their goal is to produce drama from Scotland that will stand up against the very best of drama from around the globe.  Ideas that could spin off into series are particularly welcomed.

All ideas must be submitted by a producer with a track record in film or television.

Your submission should include a detailed outline of your idea (4 / 5 pages approx.) along with a writing sample, producer’s CV / company resume and details of any other key talent or relevant information.

Warehouse Theatre- International Playwriting Competition 2007

Warehouse Theatre Company's International Playwriting Festival celebrates 22 successful years in 2007.
The festival is held in two parts.
The first is the competition with entries accepted from all over the world and judged by a panel of distinguished theatre practitioners.
The second is the festival itself which showcases the selected plays from the competition.

Soho presents: the verity bargate award/playwrights network

Soho's hunt for the most original and exciting new play.

Every two years Soho Theatre launches a national competition to find the best new play by an emerging writer. The winner will thrill London audiences with their imaginative, daring and relevant work.

Workshops
They aim to welcome writers from a variety of backgrounds and levels of experience to take part in a series of their workshops on the process behind creating a new piece of theatre for the VBA.

New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest

New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest is accepting scripts for new works that:

1) Enhance self-realization
2) Support peace and social justice
3) Foster new understanding of minority issues that focus on racial, ethnic and gender discrimination both in the United States and abroad
4) Empower youth to build healthy inner foundations
5) Educate to gain further insight into healthy social/emotional living
6) Shed new light on religious, spiritual, and cultural differences and issues
7) Build respect for cultural expression and identity in a world that is experiencing rapid globalization
8) Explore the widening gap between the values this country was founded on and the values we present to the world today

Eligible scripts- Original full-length (no longer than 2 hours) and one-act stage plays including children's plays. Please note: scripts having received a workshop, staged reading, or non-professional production are also eligible.

Generation Science seeks writers, directors & designers

Generation Science tours educational science shows and workshops to over 50,000 children in schools across Scotland.

As the touring programme of Edinburgh Science Festival, they aim to show that science is amazing. They deliver fun, accessible and inspiring experiences to children that support their learning in schools.

As part of redevelopment of their existing programme, they are currently seeking new writers, directors and designers to help them to create ten fantastic new science shows over the next three years.

If you are interested, please send a covering letter and CV to heidi@scifest.co.uk. They are keen to work across art-forms, so whether you work in science communication, theatre, mime, magic, puppetry, dance or film, please get in touch.

To help them with their selection process, please choose a bit of science which inspires you and tell them how you would communicate it to a young audience.

Flesh Pot Theatre- One Act Play Showcase

London based theatre company Flesh Pot Theatre are looking to source one act plays for performance at The Devonshire Arms in Kensington. they are currently favouring quirky comedies.

Plays should have no more than four characters, or have the ability for actors to double up, and should be 30-40mins in length.

The company are unable to pay writers for their material, unless it is being performed, at which time, depending on door sales- they can pay a nominal royalties fee.
Any material not used will be returned.

BBC Writers Room – The royal Tapes

Throughout July, Five Live will be looking at the monarchy - and The Royal Tapes will develop the debate through dramas starring Alistair McGowan.

They're looking for scripts up to three minutes long with two characters in them, inspired by the role that the monarchy plays in our lives. The five best scripts will be made into radio plays and broadcast on Matthew Bannister's programme.

Your entry can be funny, surreal, poignant or challenging, about anyone, and set anywhere – so be original, provocative, and dramatic.

Remember, you're writing for the multi-voiced and multi-talented Alistair McGowan so the sky's the limit – although of course any female characters will be cast separately!

Acid Theatre - looking for a monologue

AcidTheatre are looking for a radical 30-60 minute monologue for a male Actor, based around the theme of Freedom of Speech in the Theatre.

"It is a legitimate function of art to provoke debate and sometimes to express controversial ideas. A genuinely free, pluralist society would celebrate this aspect of our culture. Those who use violent means to silence it must be vigorously opposed." - excerpt from an open letter supporting the writer of Behzti.

The winning entry will be optioned for production by AcidTheatre for £250.

The Oldham Coliseum Theatre script reading

The Coliseum employs a reader to read all submitted scripts. If a script is submitted the writer will receive a written report on their work within approximately four months. A stamped self-addressed envelope should also be sent for return of the script, along with a SAE for acknowledgement of receipt, if required.

All scripts submitted to the reader must:

  • Be clearly typed
  • Be printed using one side of A4 for each page
  • Contain a page of casting requirements
  • Contain a brief synopsis

Lead Script in a dynamic partnership with our Programmes Director, building on past successes and providing creative leadership for expansion in the future.

Script develops new writers for stage, screen and radio in the West Midlands

Applicants should be strategic thinkers with fundraising and managerial skills and at least two years relevant experience in theatre, film, tv, radio or similar.

This is currently a part-time post (18.5 hrs pw by arrangement) initially on a fixed term contract. Salary £24,000-£26,000 pro-rata. Based in the creative heart of Birmingham.

Traverse Theatre Public Workshop with Rona Munro

Rona Munro, the Traverse Theatre ’s Scottish Arts Council Senior Playwriting Fellow, gives the second of her two talks for the Traverse’s Spring season. Rona has written extensively for stage, radio, television and film for over 20 years and is currently under commission to the Traverse for a new play.
