Up Close - Coming Soon | |||
Location: CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow Whether you are an aspiring or emerging writer, someone interested in seeing exciting new pieces of theatre, or keen to pick up a bargain in our Bookshop - there is something for everyone at our Up Close event. Events on the day Introduction to Playwriting (10.30am - 12.00pm) – useful guidance for aspiring playwrights and interested members of the public. No experience necessary. Making Applications & Proposals (11am - 1.30pm) - Cultural Enterprise Office's practical workshop for individuals on making applications and proposals for funding, commissions and residencies. This workshop covers planning and structuring your approach, the key information you need for your application, discussion on what funders and commissioners are looking for and the materials required to support your proposal. The workshop will be delivered by playwright and theatre producer Tim Nunn, Cultural Enterprise Office's Specialist Performance Adviser. BBC Scotland Radio Drama (12.30pm - 2pm and 2pm - 3.30pm) – for anyone interested in writing for radio, led by David Ian Neville Further Skills for Playwrights (2.30pm - 4pm and 4.30pm - 6pm)- for those with some experience of playwriting, or who have attended an Inspire session in the past. De-Mystifying Writing for Television (4pm - 6pm) - BBC Scotland Drama Department along with a panel of Scottish Screenwriters discuss their experiences writing on long running and returning series. Informal Play Reading (6pm - 7pm) – a reading from a group of Scotland’s writers and actors working together. Since booking opened on 1 March, we have been delighted with the overwhelming response. We have added some more workshops and are working to try to accommodate as many people as possible. I've Been Thinking Location: Terrace Bar, CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow Dates: 28 April and 30 June 2010 How do we forge a sense of community between individual artists? How do we share our thoughts and reactions to the world around us, and explore the richness of our experiences? The Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland, invite you as writers from all levels of experience to join us for I’ve Been Thinking..., a series of informal gatherings and discussions every other month. Speakers will talk about a topic on their minds, leading to conversations, discussions and debate over a drink. Following the success of our Iran discussion, held on 24 February, where Julie Ellen (Creative Director, Playwrights' Studio, Scotland) was joined by Nazil Tabatabai-khatambakhsh and Maryam Hamidi to discuss life and culture for artists in Iran, and reactions to the situation there, we invite you to come along to our future sessions in April and June, with fresh topics shaping each event. 19th Meyer-Whitworth Award Nominations Now Being Accepted | ||||
We are delighted to announce details of the 19th Meyer-Whitworth Award, awarded and funded by the Royal National Theatre Foundation and managed by the Playwrights' Studio, Scotland in association with the UK Playwrights Network. The award is made to the writer whose play, in the Judges’ opinion, most satisfies the following description:
The Judges reserve the right to advise that no script meets the required standards of the award and that therefore the award should not be made. Nominations must be made by directors of professional theatre companies. Plays nominated must be in the English language and have been produced professionally in the UK for the first time between 1 November 2008 and 30 November 2009. The deadline for entries is 31 March 2010
Fuse Script Reading Service Fuse is a unique Scotland wide initiative that makes information about new plays available to the artistic directors at the country's top theatre venues. Plays submitted to Fuse will be read and critiqued annonymously by theatre professionals. This feedback is made available free of charge to the playwright. Off The Page Informal afternoon play-reading sessions at the Citizens Theatre. Informal and sociable meetings aimed at those who are young at heart and mature in years (although all are welcome)! Imaginate Autumn Exchange 2010 Imaginate Location: Howden Park Centre, Livingston Deadline: 31 March 2010 Proposals are currently being invited from artists and performing companies who would like to participate in this year’s Imaginate Autumn Exchange to take place at Howden Park Centre in Livingston on 27 and 28 October 2010. Autumn Exchange is the key meeting place for all those involved in the performing arts sector for children and young people. Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship 2010 Scottish Arts Council Location: Scotland Deadline: 9 April 2010 The Scottish Arts Council supports the Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship which offers writers the opportunity to spend up to six weeks in a self-catering studio in France. Travel and accommodation are paid for plus a grant of £300 per week which is awarded to successful writers for the duration of their stay. Applicants must be published writers who are based in Scotland. They must be free to spend up to six weeks between June and August 2010 at Hôtel Chevillon International Arts Centre in Grez-sur-Loing. WACtheatre - WACfest Weekend Aberdeen-based WACtheatre are an organisation set up specifically to produce new work and to create opportunities for writers and actors in North East Scotland, particularly around Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. WAC hold weekly meetings (WAC Wednesdays) to bring together playwrights and actors based in Aberdeen and the Shire to read plays and discuss how they can be developed. WACtheatre are holding their first writing festival this April with performances, readings and workshops. Writers' Workshops London Playwrights' Collective Location: London Dates: March 2010 With specially designed workshops, the LPC offers an environment conducive to creativity and open to new ideas and methods. Sunday Surgery msft Making Theatre Work Location: The Edinburgh Cellars, 125 Newington Green Road, London, UK Dates: Every last Sunday of the month from 28 February 2010 msft offers a Sunday Service for experienced as well as novice writers, where you can develop creative ideas, build characters and push your plot to its dramatic limits. Once you have created a story, msft will provide space to put it on its feet, a professional director and trained actors to bring it to life in front of an audience. People's Play Award 2010 New Writing North/People's Theatre Company Location: North East England, UK Deadline: 25 March 2010 New Writing North and the People’s Theatre Company are proud to announce the launch of the 2010 People’s Play Award. Bare Bones Nights - Call for Submissions Old Red Lion Theatre Location: London, UK Deadline: 17 April 2010 Bare Bones Nights consist of four new short plays submitted by exciting playwrights of the moment which are chosen and directed by emerging directors and using professional actors. The concept for the night is that only the bare minimum stage devices are used – so only the absolutely necessary props, costume, set, lights. They are especially interested in existing plays of 1 hour or so as they have some exciting slots waiting in the new year, but full length dark dramas would be warmly received. Everyone Has the Right iceandfire Location : London Everyone Has the Right is a rolling script submission service for plays with human rights at their heart. A joint initiative with Amnesty International UK, Everyone Has the Right provides a natural home for writers exploring human rights stories to create surprising and entertaining theatre. Please send your script, short synopsis (no more than 200 words) and cover sheet (Download as Word Doc or as PDF file) to: Everyone Has the Right, iceandfire, Toynbee Hall, 28 Commercial Street, London, E1 6LS. They cannot accept scripts by email or fax. You will receive an emailed report within two months of submission. Plays from outside of the UK are welcomed but they are only able to report on new plays, that have not been professionally produced, written in English. Scotland : Write Here, Write Now As part of the Scotland Writes initiative, the BBC Scotland Comedy department is launching a brand new competition – SCOTLAND: WRITE HERE, WRITE NOW – to seek out the country’s most exciting new comic writers. The competition is open to Scottish and Scottish-based writers. They want you to write the opening 10-15 pages (no more than 2000 words) of a contemporary comedy drama or a sitcom. Set your script in Scotland with at least one Scottish character in the cast. They want to hear a contemporary Scottish story, whether it’s from Oban, Orkney or Edinburgh. Writers Factory: Feature Film Course Eleanor Yule/Scottish Screenwriters Location: CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow Dates: 30 March - 24 August 2010 This long-awaited 22 week intensive evening class will have its first run at the CCA in Glasgow in Spring 2010. Devised by UK screenwriting guru Phil Parker and intended for committed screenwriters, the course is heavily workshop based and includes new thinking on the craft, particularly relating to the central importance of genre and theme. The workload for participants will be significant throughout the 22 weeks, the aim being to move from idea to completed rough draft feature film screenplay within a supportive developmental environment. Ideally, participants will begin the course with a new idea rather than reworking extant material. The course will be taught by writer, director Eleanor Yule in collaboration with Scottish Screenwriters. Screen Story Competition Winners of the Euroscript Screen Story Competition write three drafts of their script within a specified time period. Working one-to-one with a script consultant they receive as much face-to-face and written feedback as is required to complete each of the three drafts. Once each draft is complete, they receive a full script report, usually running to five or six pages, together with an annotated script. Writers' Lab University of Bolton Location : North West England What is the Scheme? The University of Bolton is developing a writer's programme in association with a number of production companies in the North West (AbbottVision, Red Productions, Lime Pictures, BBC writersroom, LA Productions, Made In Manchester, R.S.J. Productions). This is a scheme for writers that want to develop their skills working in an industry context. Writers will develop an original script as well as learn about team writing and producing. In order to develop the scheme effectively we are offering free places to 16 new writers from the North West. This pilot scheme will put writers into direct contact with the best TV, radio and web producers in the region. Who can apply for this scheme? The scheme is open to writers based within the North West region who have already had a script commissioned or had a professional reading of their work (for any platform, film, radio, stage, TV or the web) or had material published. You will be expected to be able to work effectively on scripted material from the start of the project. This is not a scheme for beginners. Applicants must be over 18 and not in full-time education.
