Welcome to Playwrights' Studio, Scotland's May e-bulletin.

These bulletins contain information about future Playwrights' Studio projects and activities, as well as many other opportunities available to playwrights across the UK and internationally from a range of sources.

Studio News covers our current activities and items of interest; Opportunities includes useful information and competitions; our Events section lists upcoming activities; and in Quick Links you can access the world wide web for news on other events and productions that we hope may be of interest to you. At the very bottom of this bulletin is information on the Scottish Society of Playwrights.

The Singles: New Scottish Drama From BBC Scotland and Scottish Screen

BBC Scotland Television Drama and Scottish Screen are launching a new slate of television plays - an exciting returnable brand of 60 minute single films of up to a maximum of £450,000 for broadcast on BBC Scotland.

Their goal is to produce drama from Scotland that will stand up against the very best of drama from around the globe.  Ideas that could spin off into series are particularly welcomed.

All ideas must be submitted by a producer with a track record in film or television.

Your submission should include a detailed outline of your idea (4 / 5 pages approx.) along with a writing sample, producer’s CV / company resume and details of any other key talent or relevant information.

Warehouse Theatre- International Playwriting Competition 2007

Warehouse Theatre Company's International Playwriting Festival celebrates 22 successful years in 2007.
The festival is held in two parts.
The first is the competition with entries accepted from all over the world and judged by a panel of distinguished theatre practitioners...
The second is the festival itself which showcases the selected plays from the competition.

Soho presents: the verity bargate award/playwrights network

Soho's hunt for the most original and exciting new play.

Every two years Soho Theatre launches a national competition to find the best new play by an emerging writer. The winner will thrill London audiences with their imaginative, daring and relevant work.

Workshops
They aim to welcome writers from a variety of backgrounds and levels of experience to take part in a series of their workshops on the process behind creating a new piece of theatre for the VBA.

New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest

New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest is accepting scripts for new works that:

1) Enhance self-realization
2) Support peace and social justice
3) Foster new understanding of minority issues that focus on racial, ethnic and gender discrimination both in the United States and abroad
4) Empower youth to build healthy inner foundations
5) Educate to gain further insight into healthy social/emotional living
6) Shed new light on religious, spiritual, and cultural differences and issues
7) Build respect for cultural expression and identity in a world that is experiencing rapid globalization
8) Explore the widening gap between the values this country was founded on and the values we present to the world today

Eligible scripts- Original full-length (no longer than 2 hours) and one-act stage plays including children's plays. Please note: scripts having received a workshop, staged reading, or non-professional production are also eligible.

The McLellan Award 2007 Play Competition

2007 marks the 100 anniversary of the birth of Robert McLellan one of Scotland's greatest dramatists. The Arran Theatre and Arts Trust, in partnership with Robert McLellan’s family, the community of Arran and North Ayrshire Council, will work together to bring to a new generation, through drama, visual arts and music, the beauty, wit and vigour of McLellan’s work and, at the same time, strive to further  his hopes and aims by encouraging and sponsoring new work in Scots by young Scottish playwrights.

The prize for the competition is £1000, and a production of the play by Nutshell at the McLellan festival in September.

Plays should be 60 - 90mins long, be in any form of Scots or Scots dialect - living Scots - rural or urban, and be capable of being performed by no more than 5 actors.

Flesh Pot Theatre- One Act Play Showcase

London based theatre company Flesh Pot Theatre are looking to source one act plays for performance. The showcase would begin in June at The Devonshire Arms in Kensington.

Plays should have no more than four characters, or have the ability for actors to double up, and should be 30-40mins in length.

The company are unable to pay writers for their material, unless it is being performed, at which time, depending on door sales- they can pay a nominal royalties fee.
Any material not used will be returned.

Big Village Theatre Company- Playwriting Competition


Winning scripts will be performed in a three- or four-night run at an Edinburgh venue in November 2007. Winning playwrights will be welcome to attend rehearsals and will receive two complimentary tickets to each performance .

Plays must be of one-act length (40-60 minutes) and written for the stage as opposed to any other medium.
Plays must feature roles for between four and eight actors (any gender balance).

Performance Opportunity from Bognor Regis Drama Club

Playwrights could earn cash prizes, the Alice Mortimer Challenge Cup and performances of their work in the 2007 playwriting competition organised by Bognor Regis Drama Club.

The three winning plays will all be performed by the group in Spring 2008. Entries should last twenty to 45minutes and should not have been previously performed. Entry fee, £4. This year's judge is Kate Betts, winner of Channel Four's telent search 'The Play's The Thing'.

Write Right Now

The Churchill Theatre, Bromley are looking for new writers to submit short plays for it's Ninth Annual Playwriting competition.

Entries should be an original drama, based around this year's theme of '30'. They should be no more than fiftenn minutes in length and for a maximum of six characters.

Shortlisted plays will get the chance to work with a dramaturge and director to progress the piece to be performed by professional actors here on the Churchill Theatre stage in a rehearsaed reading on 19 July 2007.

Traverse Theatre Public Workshop with Rona Munro

Rona Munro, the Traverse Theatre ’s Scottish Arts Council Senior Playwriting Fellow, gives the second of her two talks for the Traverse’s Spring season. Rona has written extensively for stage, radio, television and film for over 20 years and is currently under commission to the Traverse for a new play.
