Changing Roles

March 2008

Birds of Paradise's Agent for Change programme, with support from the Playwrights' Studio, Scotland, is presenting 'Changing : Roles' in March 2008.

Designed for the benefit of playwrights and directors of new work in Scotland, this one day event will stimulate debate around the question of how we can increase the visability of disabled actors on the mainstream Scottish stage. We will look at the role of the writer in creating characters with disabilities - if, indeed, that is the right course of action - and also look at the director's opportunity to cast roles regardless of impairment.

With contributors from across the UK we will look at what has been done so far to address the under-representation of disabled performs in theatre and then go on to look at what can be done to use the creative process to redress the inequality. Action will be the desired outcome of the day!

Keep watching the Playwrights' Studio bulletin for further information and information on how to book your place.

Enquires can be sent to
robert@birdsofparadisetheatre.co.uk

Berlinerfestspiele – call for applications

The Stückemarkt or “play market”, an integral feature of the Theatertreffen since 1978, is a market place for writers, agents, theatremakers, critics and audiences. First and foremost it is a springboard for young, as yet unknown dramatists from across Europe. In almost every case, staged readings at the Stückemarkt have proved to be a decisive step in the careers of emerging writers.

New Playwriting Prize and tt stückemarkt Commission

The Berliner Festspiele, in conjunction with the Federal Centre for Political Education, will present two awards at the Stückemarkt of the Theatertreffen. The prizewinners will be chosen by an independent jury.

The New Playwriting Prize is worth 5,000 Euro. It will be awarded to one of the authors whose play is presented as a staged reading. There is one notable change from 2007: the Development Prize for New Writing is now coupled with a premiere at the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin.

The tt stückemarkt Commission, first awarded in 2007 and worth 7,000 Euro, is awarded to one of the participants in the playwriting workshop of the Stückemarkt. The author’s new play will be premiered at a leading theatre.

Applications for 2008

For the Stückemarkt 2008, they are inviting dramatists and theatre publishers from all over Europe to submit new plays in any European language. The only requirement is that the plays must not have been premièred or performed in Germany before.
The jury, consisting of renowned theatre professionals from various fields, will select five texts for the Stückemarkt. These will then be presented in scenic readings during the Theatertreffen in May. Experienced directors and dramaturges will produce these readings in cooperation with the authors.
Five further authors will be selected by the jury to take part in the dramatists’ workshop with the author and dramaturg John von Düffel.

New Theatre Publications -accepting submissions

New Theatre Publications is a publishing company that is owned and managed by writers. The Playwrights’ Co-operative is a not-for-profit organisation whose aims are to cut out the middle-men and profit-makers from the world of theatre publishing and give individual playwrights the opportunity to take greater control and responsibility in the marketing of their work with all the benefits that full publication brings.

On their website you'll find their full catalogue of theatre play scripts plus details of the playwrights and authors. If you're a member of a professional or amateur theatre group or dramatic society you can order acting editions of play scripts and if you decide to stage a production you can arrange performing licences.

New Theatre actively encourages submissions and aim to respond within one month. Manuscripts should be digital and can either be e-mailed or posted on a CD. They require two files; one being a synopsis and any useful information such as estimated running time and cast details, the other being the play itself. Writers should visit the website for detailed guidelines and style tips.

Theatre groups and schools may be interested to know that New Theatre Publications offer free pdfs or fourteen day book loans to read from.
