The Writers' Factory new programme launch
 

Playwrights' Studio, Scotland and Scottish Screen have teamed up to launch the second phase of The Writers' Factory, an innovative screenwriting programme providing workshop-based training and support across Scotland for writers at all stages of their career.

The new programme includes the much anticipated 22-week Feature Film Course. Devised by UK Screenwriting guru, Phil Parker, it is designed to give writers the creative and technical tools they need to write a feature length screenplay.

Key to the success of The Writers' Factory are the tutors, and this new programme boasts an expanded pool of trainers to widen the reach of the courses across Scotland. All the trainers are experienced screen industry professionals who have been taught how to deliver the workshops by the course designer, Phil Parker.

Writers Factory: Feature Film Course
Eleanor Yule/Scottish Screenwriters
Location: CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow  
Dates: 30 March - 24 August 2010

This long-awaited 22 week intensive evening class will have its first run at the CCA in Glasgow in Spring 2010.

Devised by UK screenwriting guru Phil Parker and intended for committed screenwriters, the course is heavily workshop based and includes new thinking on the craft, particularly relating to the central importance of genre and theme.

The workload for participants will be significant throughout the 22 weeks, the aim being to move from idea to completed rough draft feature film screenplay within a supportive developmental environment. Ideally, participants will begin the course with a new idea rather than reworking extant material.

The course will be taught by writer, director Eleanor Yule in collaboration with Scottish Screenwriters.

Cost: £550

Writers Factory: Introduction to Screenwriting
Mikey Murray/University of Stirling
Location: University of Stirling, Stirling  
Dates: 24 June - 4 November, 7-9pm

This 20 week evening class (2 hours per week) will run at Stirling University. Devised by UK screenwriting guru Phil Parker and intended for new screenwriters, the course is workshop based and includes new thinking on the craft of writing a short film, particularly relating to the central importance of genre and theme.

The workload for participants is not hugely time consuming throughout the 20 weeks, the aim being to move from idea to completed short film screenplay within a supportive developmental environment. Ideally, participants will begin the course with a new idea rather than reworking old material.

The course will be taught by writer/director Mikey Murray.

Writers' Factory: Feature Film Course
Edinburgh Skillset Screen and Media Academy Scotland
Location: Screen Academy Scotland Production Centre 
Dates: October 2010 onwards

This long-awaited 22 week intensive evening class will have its first run at ESSAMA in early autumn 2010. The aim of this course is to move from idea to completed Rough Draft feature film screenplay within a supportive developmental environment.

You must either have completed the Writers’ Factory Introduction to Screenwriting course or the Edinburgh Skillset Screen & Media Academy PGCert or Masters screenwriting programmes. A short sample of your screenwriting will also be required.

The workload for participants will be significant throughout the 22 weeks, the aim being to move from idea to completed Rough Draft feature film screenplay within a supportive developmental environment. Ideally, participants will begin the course with a new idea rather than reworking extant material

One Scotland Many Voices Film Festival - Call For Entries
GMAC

Now in its fourth year, GMAC hosts a festival of short films on 19 June to celebrate the creative and diverse voices of Scotland.

The festival welcomes documentaries, dramas and animations made by or about refugee and asylum seeking communities. Entries should be based around this year's theme, 'Journeys', and have a maximum running time of fifteen minutes.

Glasgow Film Festival 2011 - Call for Entries

The Glasgow Film Festival is now accepting submissions for 2011. The Festival will run from 17-27 February, in venues across Glasgow. Co-Directors Allison Gardner and Allan Hunter are hard at work selecting a programme that will build on the Festival's success and growing international reputation. The films received as submissions are a vital part of that programme.

Gaelic Writers: Interested in Writing for Television Drama?

Coming Up - Call for Submissions

Coming Up is the only talent scheme currently in the UK where emerging film-makers have the opportunity to make an authored drama with a guaranteed network broadcast. 
 
They will make up to seven eye-catching, innovative, challenging films from the best fresh talent in the UK.  Each film will be for a 30 minute slot on Channel 4, and they are looking for:

  • Bold, original and surprising ideas with strong voices - unafraid of ambition, wit, urgency and fearless entertainment.
  • Films that can be shot in four days on a limited budget

Sir Peter Ustinov Television Award
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation
Location: UK-wide
Deadline: 1 July 2010

This competition is designed to motivate non-American novice writers under the age of 30, and to offer them the recognition and encouragement that might lead to a successful career in television scriptwriting.

The winner will be flown to New York City to be presented with an award and a US$2,500 prize at the International Emmy World Television Festival in November 2010. The winning script will be read by actors in front of an audience at the Festival.

To enter, you will need to create a completed half-hour to one-hour English-language television drama script suitable for a family audience.

Red Planet Prize - Call for Entries
Red Planet Pictures

This year's competition is for an original 60 minute television script, either a single play or a pilot for a new series. You are initially required to submit the first ten pages along with a short synopsiss.

The winner will receive £5,000, a script commission, and the option of representation if required. Red Planet and Kudos will also mentor finalists for the Prize.

The John Brabourne Awards

Scottish Screen at EIFF 2010
Edinburgh International Film Festival

The full programme for the 2010 edition of Edinburgh International Film Festival has been announced and it's set to be a special year for Scottish Screen supported projects.

Highlights include the world premiere of Donkeys, Morag McKinnon's much anticipated debut feature, and the second film to emerge from the Scottish-Danish Advance Party project - after Andrea Arnold's worldwide sensation Red Road. Skeletons, Outcast, and The Edge of Dreaming are also further examples of home-grown talent

A number of Scottish Screen supported short films have also been accepted into the festival. I'll be Right Here (Gregor Johnstone), Paris/ Sexy (Ruth Paxton), Ever Here I Be (Kate Burton), Labour (Michael Keillor), The Tannery (Iain Gardner) and Battenberg (Stewart Comrie) will screen during the festival.

Online Feature Film Writing Course

This online feature film writing course is aimed at scriptwriters who would prefer to work online rather in a classroom situation.

The course focuses on rigorous, tutor-based script consultation from idea to draft screenplay. There will also be an opportunity at Edinburgh International Film Festival in June 2011 for students to pitch their scripts to industry professionals.

The aim of the course is to provide concrete, practical feedback at six crucial milestones of script development and to anchor that feedback through the use of course literature, online lessons and exercises and peer support.

The Oxford Screenwriters' Network

This group is for professional screenwriters who want to share the lonely burden of writing in an atmosphere of encouragement and mutual support. The group is not for beginners nor is it a substitute for training.

The requirements for membership of the Oxford Screen Writers Network is one or more of the following:

    * Attended OFVM ADVANCED screenwriting course
    * Working as a screenwriter/script editor in paid capacity
    * Writer credits on Funded short (Screen South, Film Council etc)
    * Writer Credit on a low or micro budget feature
    * Screening writing degree or postgraduate qualification

The group will meet fortnightly on a Sunday night at OFVM and serve as a form of support to local screenwriters by helping them develop their work and ideas. Members will be asked to pitch ideas to the group and submit work (either synopsis, treatment, outline or script draft) to the group for mutual feedback.

Write for Animation with Ian Fenton
Teesside University's School of Arts & Media

Teesside University’s School of Arts & Media is offering Writing for Animation, a one-day workshop hosted by award-winning scriptwriter Ian Fenton, who also directs the Story Engine conference

In this highly practical workshop, Ian will look at the skills required to write for animation compared to live action film. He’ll focus on the dynamics of developing an animation screenplay – how you go about writing a script for it, what the process is and how you create a ‘story bible’.

Television Drama - The Writers Debate 2010
