Ignite 2009: Finding new young dramatic voices

In September 2009, Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland and BBC Scotland Radio Drama launched an exciting competition, for writers aged 16 to 26 years, to find stage and radio’s best young dramatists. To enter the competition, writers were asked to submit a synopsis and a scene for a play either for radio or stage on any subject.

We are delighted to announce the two winners of Ignite 2009 are Lewis Hetherington for Chasing Daylight and Philippa Mannion for Bookworms. The winners were selected from a shortlist of young writers during a workshop day where the submitted scenes were read by an ensemble cast of professional actors.

Lewis and Philippa will receive the exclusive opportunity to be mentored by a top playwright to turn their idea into a full length play. Extracts from the winning plays will also be recorded with professional actors in a unique one day radio experience.

Julie Ellen, Creative Director of Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland, said “There is always a concern when holding an open competition that we will not receive entries of the standard that we dreamt of but I have been impressed by the quality of writing throughout the competition and I am really excited by the potential in Lewis’ and Philippa’s plays.”
