Call for Submissions: Maggie's Penguin Parade

Filter News

Deadline: 11 December 2017

Submissions are now open for the 2018 Maggie's Penguin Parade. This is a paid opportunity and applications from both professional and emerging artists are welcome.

Maggie's Centre and Wild in Art are pleased to bring this public art event to the streets of Dundee. Maggie's Penguin Parade will consist of a waddle (yes that really is the collective noun for penguins!) of penguin sculptures in the city to create a fun, free art gallery to take people on a journey of discovery for ten weeks during Summer 2018.

Dundee has long had an association with penguins and replicas of these lovely beasts can be found throughout the city. RRS Discovery was the last wooden three-masted ship to be built in Britain and its first mission was the British National Antarctic Expedition. Discovery carried Captain Scott and Ernest Shakleton to Antarctica, the home of the penguin.

The penguin has become a symbol of the great explorers who set out from Dundee. The invasion of well dressed penguins will supplement their more indigenous friends.

Maggie's are working with Wild in Art, the UK's leading producer of spectacular mass participation public art events and creative education projects. Wild in Art events are specifically designed to bring artists, businesses, schools and communities together, promoting creativity as a truly shared and memorable experience.

Through your creativity and involvement, they will create a trail of individually designed and beautifully illustrated penguin sculptures. Maggie's are looking for inspiring, engaging artwork that will celebrate the creativity of Dundee and the surrounding areas.

They welcome designs in any art form- traditional to new media, fine art to illustrations, graffiti to mosaic. Whatever the art form, we're keen to add drama, fun and creative flourish to the Maggie's Penguin Parade. If you are commissioned, you will receive an honorarium £850 on completion of your artwork.

Following the event, the sculptures will be auctioned to raise invaluable funds for Maggie's Dundee. To date, Wild in Art has enabled over £10 million to be raised for good causes.
