Playwrights' Studio

Former Mentored Playwright

Xana Marwick

I am a  Performance Maker, Playwright and Artistic Director of Stadium Rock -  an organisaton whose Core Artistic Principal is: To create performance-based artworks that represent music, visual elements and theatrical practices equally in the process and final product. Stadium Rock's Mission is:'to tell children's stories with integrity and ingenuity to audiences of adults & children.'

I am currently under commission to Birdsnest Theatre in Association with Polka Theatre (London) to write an adaptation for the stage of former Children's Laureate Michael Rosen's Happy Harry's Cafe and will shortly begin work on re-directing Hup (Starcatcher's / RSNO)  for tours to Hong Kong and Canada. I have two projects in development with Stadium Rock: NESTS, a co-production with Frozen Charlotte Prductions. And The Marshmallow Test with playwright Morna Pearson and producer Suzy Glass.

My practice as a writer, performer, director, designer and producer is extremely diverse and has included Live Art performances within the Edinburgh Art Festival, directing youth theatre productions by acclaimed playwrights and creating unique and adventurous devised work in a variety of settings. Some of the organisations I have worked with or presented work at include:  Summerhall, Shunt London, Edinburgh Art Festival / Trigger Stuff, The Arches, Starcatchers, Tramway, The Traverse, Battersea Arts Centre, Forest Fringe, Live Theatre Newcastle, Dance Base, Imaginate, National Theatre of Scotland, //Buzzcut// and Platform.

Recent projects include:

Director for Starcatchers / RSNO co-production Hup  ('a perfectly tailored work for under two's')  - The Scotsman

Playwright with Birdsnest theatre co. (London/Netherlands) on their touring production for 3-6 year olds My Friend Mole ('well modulated, perpetually in motion, theatrical playdate for the very young') - The Stage

Creator / Director of Yellow Valley with Starcatchers for Culture 2014 ('a vivid tapestry of sounds and rhythms') - The Herald

Artist in Residence at Summerhall (Edinburgh) where I wrote new play NESTS (mentored by Douglas Maxwell)

Associate Artist at Platform Glasgow which included writing, directing and designing Hansel and Gretel ('Magical and truly un-patronising update of the Grimm's Brother's classic.') - The List

And a six month mentorship under Clare Duffy as part of the Playwrights' Studio Scotland Mentoring scheme.
