Anita John

Anita is an emerging playwright, published poet and fiction writer  and  also an experienced creative writing tutor.  

In October 2019 her short play  First Steps toured to sell-out audiences in the Scottish Borders as part of the  Unveiled Secrets Project with Odd Productions Theatre Company and fellow playwright Oliver  Eade First Steps was  also  highly commended as part of the Brief Encounters Project, a playwriting opportunity with Treading the Borders Theatre Company, in partnership with Scot Rail,  during which the play was first written.  

Her ten-minute plays  Stop Procrastinating (Director: Caitlin Skinner) and  Two Degrees and Rising (Director: Kate Nelson) were performed as part of Borders Pub Theatre's inaugural sell-out event  In The Beginning (March 2019) and follow up event  Take Two (October 2019). Borders Pub Theatre was created by the mentees of the Scottish Borders Playwriting Programme with support from playwright Jules Horne and Playwright's Studio Scotland. It aims to bring regular script-in-hand performances to pubs throughout the Scottish Borders. Anita is Treasurer of the group.  

Script-in-hand readings of  Stop Procrastinating  (Borders Pub Theatre)  and  First Steps  (Duns Players)  were also  performed at the inaugural Duns  PlayFest May 2019.   

In January 2018 an extract from  Amy's Dilemma  (Director: Alasdair Hunter)  was performed, script in hand, at  TalkFest in the Borders as part of the Scottish Borders Playwriting Programme with Playwrights' Studio Scotland.   

In 2016 a clip from her script for the National Theatre of Scotland's   Yes, No, Don't Know Five Minute Theatre Show was included in the TV documentary The National Theatre of Scotland: A Dramatic Decade, screened on BBC Two.  

Anita's poetry and prose has been published widely including  in  The Scotsman,  New Writing Scotland,  MsLexia Aesthetica, Gutter,  Northwords Now, the  Eildon Tree, Scottish  PENnings and Zoomorphic, among others.  Her bookChild's Eye collection of short stories and poems, was published by Biscuit Publishing after winning the 2012 Biscuit International Short Stories and Flash Fiction competition. In 2013  she was selected as a Borders Showcase Poet by the Scottish Poetry Library and  CABN.  

She has been Writer in Residence for  RSPB Scotland Loch Leven since 2017, has an MSc in Creative Writing from Edinburgh University and is a  Live Literature Scotland Author.
