Former Mentored Playwright

Hazel Darwin-Clements

Hazel is a writer and performer from Edinburgh who also creates podcasts and puppets.

She's passionate about quality theatre for young audiences and is an Associate Artist with Starcatchers. She has enjoyed several residencies with them. These include a year-long residency at the Byre Theatre, and a 6-month residency in childcare settings in Aberdeenshire. She was co-creator of Hup  (Starcatchers and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra) which was part of the Made in Scotland Showcase and Imaginate and went on to tour internationally. She created and performed the Attic  which toured with Theatre in Schools Scotland and was part of Imaginate. Other credits include Too Many Cooks, Round in Circles, Shake n' Bake and the Elf Experiment.

She is also an Associate Artist with Frozen Charlotte and has worked on many wonderful projects with them, including a 3-month residency in Brunei creating a performance called Blush.

Hazel is currently looking for ways to create a more sustainable practice and consider the Climate Crisis as a central theme to her work. She began by having 100 conversations about Climate Change and published a podcast called CliMates, early in 2020.

Mentoring Programme 2020

Hazel was part of our Mentoring Programme for 2020. She developed Maya & the Whale as part of the programme:

Maya hasn't got time to save a dying whale. Unfortunately, a gigantic whale has washed up on the beach and she seems to be the only one who cares. This is typical, most people in her life ignore the looming Climate Crisis. What would it take for people to make a change?

Hazel was mentored by Lewis Hetherington.
