Following a career as Fiction Editor of a large publisher, Stewart began writing for theatre in the early 90s as a member of the Byre Writers. His first play, Audience, featuring David Tennant, was toured throughout Scotland by 7:84 and was followed by Looking After Norman, a musical play for children that has had touring productions in both the UK and America.
His first full-length play, Toshie, was commissioned and produced by Dundee Rep main-stage in 1994 and had a further production in 2003 by The Abbey Theatre Club. Two more Scottish Arts Council commissions followed.
Apart from writing for theatre, Stewart has given workshops in play structure to The Byre Writers and directed for Dundee Rep's community group, Creative Learning.
In 2014, the prestigious Deerfield Academy of Massachusetts brought their USA production of Looking After Norman to The Edinburgh Festival where it won the American High School Festival's Most Outstanding Production Award.
In spring 2016 Stewart completed Getting To Know LUCY, a new musical play for children and a sequel to Looking After Norman.
He lives in his native Dundee with his wife Anne and is a playwright member of The Writers' Guild of Great Britain and a composer and songwriter member of The Performing Rights Society.
